Rosa had been working all day and followed normal
routine when she boarded the bus in Montgomery,
Alabama. She took her seat ten rows back, just behind the
seats reserved for white folk. When all the seats in front of
her had filled up, the bus driver changed a sign and made
her row white seating, too. When several white
passengers moved back and told her to give up her seat,
Rosa refused. When the police officer came, she asked,
“Why do you push us around?” He responded, “I don’t
know, but the law’s the law and you’re under arrest.”
