Northcentral University Accreditations-Ph.D. Graduate Program
Northcentral University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools: http://www.ncahlc.org/ . The Higher Learning Commission
( HLC ) is an independent corporation and one of two commission members of the North Central
Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA), which is one of six institutional accreditors in the
U.S. The HLC accredits degree-granting post-secondary educational institutions in the North
Central region. NCU is also accredited by:
The United States Department of Education OPE-I.D. #03813300
By the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA)
According to the HLC, an institutional accrediting agency such as HLC evaluates an entire educational institution in terms of its mission and the agency's standards or criteria. Besides assessing formal educational activities, it evaluates such things as governance and administration, financial stability, admissions and student services, institutional resources, student learning, institutional effectiveness, and relationships with internal and external constituencies.
Accreditation by the HLC provides assurance to the public, especially prospective students, that an institution has been found to meet HLC's clearly stated requirements and criteria and there are reasonable grounds for believing that it will continue to meet them.
Accreditation provides both PUBLIC CERTIFICATION of acceptable institutional quality and an opportunity and incentive for SELF-IMPROVEMENT in the accredited institution.
The process of accreditation provides the accredited institution with an opportunity for critical self-analysis leading to improvement in quality and for consultation and advice from persons from other institutions.
Northcentral has maintained continuous accreditation by (HLC) of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 2003.
Northcentral's School of Business and Technology Management is accredited by the
Accreditation for Business Schools and Programs ( ACBSP ). This leading accreditation association for business education "develops, promotes, and recognizes best practices that contribute to continuous improvement of business education." The Association emphasizes the importance of "learning how to learn," by balancing teaching and research activities to enhance the quality of classroom instruction and contribute to student learning.

Criminal justice is a social science that attempts to identify and explain the patterns of criminal behavior and to analyze society’s ability to control crime and delinquency. It studies crime, criminals, and the criminal justice system through an interdisciplinary approach and combines legal studies, sociology, public administration, political science, psychology, forensic science, urban studies and philosophy. Criminal justice focuses on the definitions, cause, and prevention of crime, and with legal processes and the treatment and rehabilitation of offenders.

Summary Comments
Northcentral University and City University-Seattle degrees were completed via on line. Online classes are for the most part no longer referred to as “distance learning,” which often meant that a person would sign on to a closed circuit TV, watch a lecture and then complete the assignments at home. Today’s online education takes advantage of multi-media advances to create interactive classrooms and peer collaboration opportunities as well as online library resources that rival the brick and mortar libraries. In addition, while students once had to log in at specific times in order to hear a lecture, they can now sign on at their own convenience and from any location where they have access to a computer. While the rigor is not the least diminished in the process of
Page-8-Dale R. Todd earning an MPA or online PhD degree, the flexibility has dramatically improved the opportunity for dedicated students to obtain the university degree of their choice. There are now over 6 million persons taking on line classes in the United States. Retrieved from http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/new-study--over-6-million-students-learning-online-

“May 2012 - Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are teaming up to expand their online education programs and they're inviting other institutions to come on board. Called edX, the $60 million joint venture builds on MIT's existing MITx platform that enables video lesson segments, embedded quizzes, immediate feedback, online laboratories and student-paced learning.
"EdX represents a unique opportunity to improve education on our own campuses through online learning, while simultaneously creating a bold new education path for millions of learners worldwide," said MIT president Susan Hockfield in a statement.
Online education is not an enemy of residential education, but rather a profoundly liberating and inspiring ally,” MIT President Susan Hockfield said in announcing the project, according to a
Harvard Gazette report. She explained that "you can choose to view this era as one of threatening change and unsettling volatility, or you can see it as a moment charged with the most exciting possibilities for education leaders in our lifetimes." Retrieved May 6, 2012 from MIT Media

United States Department of Education: Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online
Learning: A Meta-Analysis and Review of Online Learning Studies (2009)
“A systematic search of the research literature from 1996 through July 2008 identified more than a thousand empirical studies of online learning. Analysts screened these studies to find those that
(a) contrasted an online to a face-to-face condition, (b) measured student learning outcomes, (c) used a rigorous research design, and (d) provided adequate information to calculate an effect size. As a result of this screening, 50 independent effects were identified that could be subjected to meta-analysis. The meta-analysis found that, on average, students in online learning conditions performed modestly better than those receiving face-to-face instruction. The difference between student outcomes for online and face-to-face classes—measured as the difference between treatment and control means, divided by the pooled standard deviation—was larger in those studies contrasting conditions that blended elements of online and face-to-face instruction with conditions taught entirely face-to-face”. The report prepared for the US
Department of Education found that students in online learning conditions, especially at the college level, performed better than those receiving face-to-face instruction. A copy of the complete report is available by selecting the link below: http://www2.ed.gov/rschstat/eval/tech/evidence-based-practices/finalreport.pdf

A doctoral candidate will spend many hours in solitary study, working on a dissertation, reading assorted texts, and completing complex assignments. Thus, a distance learning program with the availability of peer collaboration lends itself well to a doctoral program.
Modern society faces increasingly complex problems. To address these problems, higher education needs to produce a new type of scientist — one who understands a broad range of disciplinary approaches, is able to ask creative questions, and is trained to answer those questions with a wide range of tools. This 21st-century scientist must have a skill set that allows him or her to probe and explore problems, to find and critically evaluate information, to work productively as a member of a team, and to effectively communicate research findings to others.
The primitive communication practice of passing notes is still thriving, albeit with a few modifications. The horse and buggy days are gone and “snail mail” is in trouble, faxes are good but PDF’s are faster. Surgeons can perform surgery from New York to Los Angeles via telesurgery and judges complete criminal arraignments via teleconferencing.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation named Northcentral University a partner in its University
Education Program. In May 2009, the University’s Computer Information Security Program was certified at the highest level by the U.S. Department of Defense’s National Security Systems
(CNSS). Retrieved from http://www.reuters.com/article/2009/07/01/idUS114188+01-Jul-
