The students will be honoured with a picture and a certificate and monthly candidates will be showcased on the bulletin board across from the office. A nomination ballot box is available in the office for students and staff to submit their nominations. Character Education is embedded in the curriculum that we teach and the actions we perform at Char-Lan. Whenever possible, staff make a point to connect their instruction and their efforts with students to the character education values and credo. After School Club Char-Lan’s After School Club is now open in the Library Learning Commons. The After School Club will be open to all grades. The After School Club will operate in the mornings on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30-9:10 am. The club will be open after school on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30-4:10 pm. The space is available for those students who would like to complete their work in a quiet environment or for those students who need some assistance or supervision in order to complete their work. This is a great opportunity to catch up on homework or to receive some extra help. Staff are on hand and eager to assist students. Guidance staff and administration are currently meeting with every grade ten student (and parents) individually to discuss course selections for grade eleven, career pathways in senior high school, program options available at Char-Lan and post-secondary pathways. This is an excellent opportunity for school staff, parents and students to plan and discuss individual student success. Drama The Char-Lan Drama Club has spent the last 4 months preparing for the upcoming Sears Drama Festival competition March 21-23rd. The students have selected Ian McWethy's lighthearted comedic play: High School Reunion as their entry. Char-Lan's: Jade Verkruisen, Victoria Smodis-McCune, Audrey Smodis-McCune, Nathan Mader and Cody Harris play the five "frenemies" who spend a fateful night together at their senior prom, only to reunite at their 10th, 25th, and 65th high school reunions. A special thanks to our support team: Kate Schwartz -Stage manager, Nick Everett - makeup and props , Leif LangTechnical lighting, effects and sound and, Musical composition- Sheehan Danaher, Nick Danaher, and Blake MacDonald. Best of luck at the competition! Student Council Report February was a busy month for Student Council. Many activities such as twin day, support Team Canada day, Olympic hockey, and skating on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa were held to brighten up the winter days. Students enjoyed Valentine’s Day with a heart Scavenger Hunt, and a large word search puzzle competition. Students had the opportunity to purchase Valentine candygrams and flowers for their special someone and friends. During Carnival Week, Char-Lan clubs hosted a food day. OSAID sold lollipops, Student Council sold pizza and drinks, and Envirothon had a bake sale. Another day the entire student body was treated to ice cream sundaes. Finally, all students from grades 812 attended a semi-formal dance with a Mardi Gras theme. It was held upstairs in the CharLan arena. The hall was beautifully decorated with Mardi Gras balloons and colours. Each student was given a Mardi Gras string of beads and a choice of a mask or hat. Crazy Dave was the DJ, and he had special effects. Refreshments were also served which consisted of juice and a specially decorated cake. The students had a wonderful time at this festive occasion. Lastly, the Carnival was called “Warm Hearts” as it was dedicated to 2 special people associated with Char-Lan. The Student Council held various fundraisers to raise money to fight cancer. The money is being donated to former Char-Lan teacher, Stephanie Grady, and Baby Emma. Last Friday, Student Council hosted a hockey game fundraiser, and a bus trip to Ottawa for skating and shopping. This raised a lot of money for cancer. On Wednesday night, the final fundraiser will take place. It is a volleyball tournament after school. To date over $1,500 has been raised for baby Emma and Stephanie Grady. As usual Crusaders have been very generous. It was a busy, but productive month. Athletics Mar. 4th , 20th, & 28th Midget Boys’ Volleyball Mar. 4th, 20th, & 28th Midget Girls’ Basketball Mar. 19th & 25th Gr. 7/8 Co-Ed Hockey Mar. 19th - UC Cup 7/8 Girls’ Basketball S.D. & G. Curling The SD & G Curling Championships were held on February 18th at the Cornwall Curling Center and both Char-Lan teams competed in the championship round. The girls’ team skipped by Tosha Burns with Tori Burns, Kylie Alford and Morgan Gravelle came second in the consolation round. The mixed team skipped by Blake O’Connor with Zoe Bougie, Thomas Small and Shayla Seguin took gold and represented Char-Lan and SD & G at EOSSAA in Brockville on Thursday, February 27th. On Friday, February 28th the mixed curling team won School Council Our next School Council Meeting will be held on Monday, April 14th in Room 11 at Char-Lan. All parents are welcome to attend. Charity Hockey Teams – Char-Lan Boys vs OPP On Friday, February 28th Char-Lan staff and students enjoyed a charity hockey game pitting our men’s Crusaders against OPP Officers and school staff. Provincial Constable Joel Doiron and Char-Lan staff organized a charity hockey game which raised over $200.00 for the Stephanie Grady Wellness Fund. It was a hard fought and enjoyable battle; nevertheless our Crusader students came out on top 7 to 4. Outstanding goaltending kept the score to a respectable level. Crusader staff and students would like to thank JD and all of the OPP and the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department for their involvement in this worthwhile and spirited game! Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program Skills Competition On Wednesday February 26th the skills team from Char-Lan competed at St. Lawrence College, St. Lawrence secondary school and the Elegance School of Hairstyling in the Eastern Ontario skills qualifier for skills Canada. Our team was made up of eight grade eight girls competing in a technological challenge. Erin Sangster in hairstyling, Bailey Berube in culinary arts and Jade Verkruisen in Photography represented our school with a professional attitude. Liam Sweeney and Tristan Lalonde created technically challenging products in welding. Carpenters Alex Flaro, Devin Kennedy, Dylan MacDiarmid, Campbell Ross, Jimmy Lussier, and Gage Desgroseilliers built good examples of wood projects. This year’s most successful effort came from Carl Binette's bronze medal in small engine repair. Carl will advance to the next level and represent Eastern Ontario in Kingston, April 12th. Congratulations to all who competed. 30 Day Challenge to Stop Bullying Dr. Darcy Santor from the University of Ottawa will visit Char-Lan DHS on March 21st to engage students in a "30 Day Challenge to Stop Bullying". Preliminary Reports & Parent Teacher Interviews Secondary Preliminary Reports will be mailed home during the week of March 3rd. Parent/Teacher interviews will take place on Thursday, March 20th from 3:45 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Attendance, Punctuality and Safe Arrival Students must attend school daily in order to have the best chance at being successful. Parents or guardians, if your child is going to be absent from school or late, please contact the office and advise the Attendance Secretary by 9:20 a.m. If we have not heard from a parent or guardian, we will contact the home of any student who is not in school when the attendance is taken for those students in grade 7 & 8. If a student is going to be absent for more than a day it is very important to call the school and request that work be sent home for the student. OSSLT Preparation Preparations for the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test continue this month. Students have met with a literacy team teacher and reviewed their mock literacy test results with them. We are now in the process of working with individual students or small groups to support their preparation for the test on March 27th, 2014. Scholarships and Bursaries Students who plan to graduate this June should start to regularly check the bulletin board across from Guidance for information regarding scholarships and bursaries. This information will be posted and updated from now until the end of the school year. Specialist High School Major Our secondary students enrolled in the SHSM program will be taking part in 2 full days of first aid training. The first session will be held on Wednesday, March 19th and the second on Wednesday, March 26th. Sun .
