Chapter 1 Study Guide
OBJECTIVES: Below, you will find the main objectives for this unit of study. It is vital that you learn
these skills for this course and for the end of course exam.
1. Students will be able to identify the values and ideas prized during the Renaissance.
2. Students will be able to summarize influential literary works and techniques of key Renaissance
writers.
3. Students will be able to explain the origins and characteristics of the Northern Renaissance.
4. Students will be able to explain how printing spread ideas.
5. Students will be able to analyze historical forces and religious issues that sparked the
Reformation.
6. Students will be able to analyze the impact of Martin Luther’s religious revolt.
7. Students will be able to explain John Calvin’s Protestant teachings.
8. Students will be able to summarize the legacy of the Reformation.
This Study Guide is due on Friday, September 4th at the beginning of class. This is also the date of
your Chapter 1 test!
I. Vocabulary: For each of the following, you will need to write a definition. Some of the words below
are defined in the glossary of the text. Others, though, you will need to define using the text in which the
word or phrase appears. You can do this on a separate sheet of paper, or on index cards. You will have a
vocabulary quiz over these words on Wednesday, August 2nd.
