Section B: Your School
1. Tell us about your school. For example, What age are the students? Location?
Environment? There are no marks for this question; however, your answers to this question
help us to understand your school business better.
Our school Mission is: to Strive to come up with Kenyans of High Integrity and who will make
the country a better home in the planet. The school has only boys aged between thirteen to
twenty four years. It is located on the south west part of Narok County in the Rift valley in Kenya. It
is about 200 km from the capital city of Nairobi. The area is generally dry but receives rainfall
between December and May. People here practice pastoralism and also farming. The Dominant tribe
is Maasai of Kenya. The school does the national examinations under the 8-4-4 system of education.
The school also boarders the famous Maasai Mara National Reserve known for wild beast
migration. This our major basis why we have chosen this business as this is the hub for tourist from
all over the world, our main customers.
Section C: Your Resources
TOP TIP!
To help you score high marks in questions 2-4, we strongly recommend carrying out a
Resource Assessment. You can find a Resource Assessment Template in Weekly Guide 2 and
in the ‘Resources’ section of your school profile!
2. What resources at your school could you use to start a business and how? E.g. ‘We have
internet at school and 3 computers so we could start an internet café.’ (2)
The school has 300 acres of land which we can use part of it for farming and generate income. We
also have a room which can be used during production of our products. The waste papers are used
for recycling and make products from.
The school is also equipped with some computers where we can do research on various ways of
making our products and link with the other schools and partners.
How could you use your school’s location as a business opportunity? E.g. ‘Our school is
near a tourist attraction, so we could sell handicrafts to local tourists.’ (2)
As we indicated earlier, our school is located next to the famous Maasai Mara National Reserve
hence many people will buy our products. We are also surrounded by the local communities who are
also major consumers of our products.

How could you use your existing skills to start a business? E.g. ‘Six students have
cooking skills, so they could help other students to start a café.’ (2)
We have a lot of creative and artistic students who have the skills of making the products so we
could make and sell a variety of products like jewellery bracelets. Some also have computer skills so
we could use them to make websites, or advertisements for our local businesses. Most students also
are locals and thus can speak their language fluently and also English and German language.

The business we would like to set up is: 1.Handicrafts e.g making bracelets, rings and
traditional dress and Artwork and painting or artistic expressions to sell to tourists
Reason 1: This business idea will create a unique attractive product that will help supply to the
local business owners and our clients products of high quality about and at end the customers will
see the need to be responsible consumers by not disposing off materials that can be recycled into the
environment thus polluting it.
Reason 2: This business can be both profitable and educational as well as provide a service to the
local community by keeping toxic materials out of school and local environment especially waste
paper and plastics. Students will learn skills that will help them in future life after school.
Reason 3: It has small start-up costs since we have access to most of the materials needed for
example waste papers, plastics , beads and fabrics from local community and the profits we make
we use to expand the business and reward best students.

7.
How does your Final Business idea meet the People, Profit, Planet criteria? (6).
People: This business meets the people criteria because we will be educating the local
community about sustainability practices and making them more aware of their choices as
consumers. We are aware of how much damage waste products can bring to our environment
and effects that can have on the people. We thus recycle these wastes to reduce the dangers.
The business will be used as a platform to train young people on entrepreneur skills that will
benefit them in future.
Profit: This business meets the profit criteria because the main products we produce like
assortment of jewelleries, paintings, drawings and dress making are in high demand by the
foreign tourists and thus a sure potential of maximizing profit.
Planet: This business meets the planet criteria because recycling of waste products like
plastics will save our environment from pollutants which may have adverse effects not only
to human beings but also to plants and the environment. We shall therefore contribute a lot
to salvaging the ozone layer from depletion.

business by buying materials like paints, beads, fabriscs etc. We have also written proposals to some
organisations requesting some funds to start-up the business. The school Board of management has
also promised to give us ksh, 3000 ( about 30 Us Dollars) to start with. For sustainability, we hope
to invest more and use any profit for two years to expand the business, there after members start
