From Richardson to Early Numerical Weather Prediction Peter Lynch-invited 13 Mar 07; agreed 14 Mar 07. Chapter 3. From Early Numerical Weather Prediction to General Circulation Models for Climate Norm Phillips-invited 13 Mar 07; declined 15 Mar 07. Dave Burridge-invited 9 Apr 07; decline 10 Apr 07. Chapter 4. The Evolution of Research Goals for General Circulation Models Suki Manabe-contacted 20 Dec 06, agreed 10 Jan 07, declined 12 Jan 07 Warren Washington-agreed 25 Jan 07; Akira Kasahara will co-author Chapter 5. The Evolution of Complexity in General Circulation Models Akio Arakawa-declined, 24 Jan 07. Dave Randall agrees, 5 Feb 07. Chapter 6. Numerical Weather Prediction in the Era of Climate General Circulation Models Eugenia Kalnay-invited 13 Mar 07. Chapter 7. The Role of Observations in Developing and Evaluating General Circulation Models V. Ramanathan, contacted on 12 Feb 07; agreed 13 Feb 07. Chapter 8. The Societal Context of General Circulation Model Research and Development Jerry Mahlman, request sent on 24 Jan 07; declined 20 Feb 07. Bert Bolin request sent on 27 Apr 07. Chapter 9. Coupling Atmospheric General Circulation to Oceans Kirk Bryan has agreed to author Ch. 9 as of 22 March 07. Chapter 10. Coupling Atmospheric General Circulation to Land, Chemistry, and Biology Bob Dickinson invited 9 Apr 07; agreed 11 Apr 07. 3 Updates Leo Donner 4/27/07 Ch 8. Will approach Steve Schneider if Bert Bolin declines Ch 3. Dave Burridge suggested as alternate possibilities Dave Williamson, Adrian Simmons, Martin Miller, and Mike Cullen. Dave Williamson is not interested. Ch 6. Eugenia Kalnay (likely) declined. Since Chapter 6 deals with NWP in the era of climate models, I'm leaning in the direction of the UK Met Office, since they actually have a unified model. Instead of Eugenia, I'm thinking about Cath Senior. Richard Somerville 4/29/07 CH 3 & 6 …the possible author list could include Lennart Bengtsson, Ulrich Cubasch, Tony del Genio, Tony Hollingsworth, Masao Kanamitsu, Jeff Kiehl, John Mitchell, Kiku Miyakoda, Tim Palmer, Erich Roeckner, and Jagadish Shukla Suggestion: Seek prospective author’s direction on Chapters 3 and 6. …replace 3 and 6 with one chapter on the history of short-range, high-resolution NWP, including regional models, and another on the history of medium-range NWP with emphasis on modern groups like ECMWF and the UKMO but also their predecessors, such as Miyakoda's earlier work at GFDL. …alternatively, treat a topic like cloud and radiation parameterizations and trace its evolution in both NWP and GCM contexts, from total neglect in the early days, on through extremely simple schemes, to the present-day physically comprehensive ones. Leo Donner 5/22/07 Lennart Bengtsson has agreed to author Chapter 3. Suggestion: dispense with Chapter 6, "Numerical Weather Prediction in the Era of Climate General Circulation Models." We can always resurrect it later, should a suitable author emerge. Chapter 8 Steve Schneider, … James Fleming. As the current holder of the Revelle fellowship from AAAS and his stature as a meteorological historian, he would probably be excellent. 4 Prospective Book Publishers • Publishers • Cambridge (~$120 – $130, marketed Peter Lynch's book at $70) • Ocean Atmosphere Interaction and Climate Modeling, Boris A.
