

countries claimed land
around the Great
Lakes, Ohio, and
Mississippi Rivers
Who fought in the French and Indian
War?
This war was a struggle for
supremacy in America
between Great Britain and
France
 The Indians fought on the
side of the French.
 The French wanted to trade
furs; not colonize land.
 Great Britain wanted to
expand their empire.

What did the British want?

The successful British
colonies needed room
to grow.

They wanted to
expand westward into
French controlled
land.
Where was Spain in all of this?

Late in the war, Spain joined with France
to try to defeat the British.

They joined too late to affect the
outcome.

George Washington a 21 year old
lieutenant colonel.

His service led to him
being chosen to
command the
Continental Army
during the Revolution.
Benjamin Franklin

A respected statesman
who was outspoken in his
criticism of the French.

He commanded the
Philadelphia militia.
Results of the war

Treaty of Paris ended the
war.
French territory west of
the Mississippi went to
Spain.
Canada, America east of
the Mississippi, and some
islands in the Carribean
went to the British
The Before and After
Georgia’s Role in the War

The Treaty of Paris changed Georgia’s
western boundary to the Mississippi River.

The treaty also gave Spanish Florida to
England. This ended the Spanish threat to
the south of the Georgia colony.
Though England won, they still lost
Men and money – wars are costly
 Led to the heavy debt.

E.Q. How did the French and Indian
War help start the American
Revolution?

As a result of this huge debt, Parliament
passes a series of tax laws.

These “taxes” are imposed upon the
British colonies – Sugar Act and the Stamp
Act.

French and Indian War was not between
the French and the Indians – Wars are
usually named by the “victors” – so the
British might have named it based on who
they fought.
Called the Seven Years War in Europe, it
actually lasted nine years.
 During the war, King George III becomes
the King of England.

