INFORMATION FOR VENDORS What is Oxfam Trailwalker? Oxfam Trailwalker is a 100km walk in teams of four in under 36 hours and, for the first time in 2016, there is also a 50km event, in teams of four in under 18 hours. Oxfam Trailwalker began in 2006 in New Zealand. Since then over 10,000 participants have lined up at the start line and raised over $8.3 million. Thousands of people take part each year as participants, support crew and volunteers. Oxfam Trailwalker is the biggest fundraising event for Oxfam’s life changing work in the pacific. Without the generosity of sponsors, individuals and our participants this event would not be possible. Oxfam Trailwalker 2016 For the first time ever, we’re bringing Oxfam Trailwalker to Whakatāne! Oxfam Trailwalker will take place on April 2-3. It will begin at Mataatua Reserve on Saturday at 6am and 7am and end at Mataatua Reserve on Sunday by 7pm, although teams will begin finishing by midday Saturday. There are six checkpoints along the way for teams to meet their support crew, rest, refuel and break up the trail. Environmental Sustainability Oxfam Trailwalker aims to 'walk the talk' when it comes to demonstrating Oxfam New Zealand’s commitment to environmental sustainability. We aim to minimise the negative environmental effects of the event in every way possible – from minimising our energy consumption to being a disposable cup free event! Oxfam Trailwalker has been part of the Instep Sustainability Event Programme since 2009. Instep are our environmental monitors who work alongside us to help measure and reduce our environmental impact in every way possible. We annually review the results, and then implement best practice strategies to further conserve resources, reduce carbon emissions and protect the very environment we use for Oxfam Trailwalker. All vendors and suppliers will be required to provide information on the environmental impact of the services or products they provide. Vendor Details There are numerous ways vendors or service providers can be involved with Oxfam Trailwalker (and probably some we haven’t thought of!). Can it be recycled at the event? Food and drink packaging, and other paper products are now available in 100% recycled paper. High quality recycled serviettes are economical and can replace plates when serving items such as sausages. Below is a list of common products and their more environmentally friendly alternatives: Item Non-recyclable packaging Plastic film or cling wrap Polystyrene cups Plastic straws Plastic take-away containers and ‘clamshells’ Sugar and condiment sachets Plastic cutlery Plastic bags Disposable food trays Alternative Packaging that is 100% recyclable or compostable Cellophane wrap Heavy duty paper cups or ceramic mugs Eliminate or replace with paper straws Heavy duty paper plates and bowls Bulk dispensers Wooden or corn starch cutlery Paper bags; ask patrons if they require one Avoid using Eliminating the items outlined above will not only reduce contamination of the recycling bins but it may also save you money! Single serve packaging can be hygienically replaced by having self-serving pump or tip containers. Rather than automatically placing a cover on a coffee or drink cup or providing a straw or stirrer, first ask customers if they want one. Waste management To continue to achieve and improve on our successful waste management we require all food and beverage providers to adhere to the following requirements during the Event: Dispose all rubbish responsibly using the three-bin system of waste sorting at each checkpoint: Recyclables Organics Waste-to-landfill Ensure all recyclable materials are free from any food or waste before disposing of them in the recycling bins. Ensure your area is left clean and free of any rubbish
