Project 2: Pediatrics Balance Lab; Understanding Sensorimotor Integration in Infants and Children with Cerebral Palsy; University of Hartford: 1 intern Advisors: Sandra Saavedra, PT, PhD and Adam Goodworth, PhD How would your life be different if you could not control your head and upper body? How do infants learn to sit up? What sensory feedback is important to stabilize the upper body? Drs. Saavedra and Goodworth study how people use feedback from specific sensory systems to control core body segments. Certain pathologies affect specific sensory systems, which can cause major disabilities in some cases. For example, children with moderate to severe cerebral palsy have difficulty controlling their head and upper body which limits their ability to independently eat, talk, and read. Drs. Saavedra and Goodworth investigate sensorimotor integration in infants, adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis, and children with cerebral palsy using custom designed research equipment at the University of Hartford’s Rehabilitation Science Department. Dr. Saavedra approaches her research from the perspective of a pediatric physical therapist and while Dr. Goodworth is a biomedical engineer, underscoring the multi-disciplinary nature of their work at the University. A position is available for a research assistant to help with data collection and video behavioral coding with infants and children with cerebral palsy. Project 3: Characterization of Persons with Multiple Sclerosis at Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital: 1 intern The Mandell Multiple Sclerosis Center for Comprehensive Care and Neuroscience Research at Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital is seeking one college level intern to work on a retrospective chart extraction research project.
