Speaker, context, and significance:
“Mrs. Dubose won, all ninety-eight pound
of her…she was the bravest person I ever
knew” (112).
Atticus talking to Jem about Mrs. Dubose overcoming her addiction to
morphine.
The significance is that Atticus wants Jem to learn that courage and
bravery is not associated with physical strength, and that a person’s
mental strength is more powerful.
Speaker, context, and significance:
“Yes, suh. I felt right sorry for her, she
seemed to try more’n the rest of ‘em-”
(197).
Tom Robinson is answering Mr. Gilmer’s question about why he helped
Mayella out.
Tom has damaged his case because he should not feel sorry for a white
woman since he is black.
Speaker, context, and significance:
“It’s like being in a cocoon, that’s what’s
it is like…Like something’ asleep
wrapped up in a warm place. I always
thought Maycomb folks were the best
folks in the world, least that’s what they
seemed like” (215).
Jem is commenting about Maycomb after the trial.
The significance is that his perceptions of life in Maycomb have changed.
He understands that life is a journey and a quest for truth, and one cannot
simply accept life at face value, but must question and evolve.
Speaker, context, and significance:
“I think I’ll be a clown when I get
grown…Well I’m gonna be a new kind of
clown. I’m gonna stand in the middle of
the ring and laugh at the folks” (216).
After the trial Dill is commenting on what he would like to be when he
grows up.
The significance is that Dill has empathized with Tom at the trial but
does not like the way he feels when he empathizes, so he will choose not
to be empathetic and not to try to make a change; he chooses to get off of
the road to Atticus.
Speaker, context, and significance:
“Mr. Arthur, bend your arm down here,
like that. That’s right sir” (278).
Scout is walking Boo home after the attack.
The significance is that Scout is being empathetic. Her action shows that
she has internalized the lesson that Atticus has taught her. She has
certainly come a long way from how she treated Walter on the first day of
school.
