The issue is not… The issue is…

• That we “don’t believe in music.”

• Were mechanical instruments of music used in the Old Testament or will they be present in

Heaven?

• Are mechanical instruments of music sinful within themselves?

• Do musical instruments sound good?

• What kind of music is to be used in the New

What are we

• authorized

• Is the use of musical instruments in worship to

God authorized by God?

No group that claims to be patterning themselves after the first century church could have an instrument of music!

• Harps are mentioned in Revelation 5:8; 14:1-2; 15:1-2

• Are you sure physical, literal harps are under discussion?

I’m not! The fact that they are standing on a sea of glass

(Rev. 15:2) indicates figurative language. Wouldn’t harps be the same? Even if true, where is Bible authority that says instruments in heaven should be in church?

• David used Instrumental Music in Worship – Psalm 150; II

Chron. 29:25

• No Longer under the Old Covenant –

Col. 2:14; Gal. 5:4; Heb. 10:9,10

2 Chronicles 29:25-29 (NKJV)

25 And he stationed the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals, with stringed instruments, and with harps, according to the commandment of David, of Gad the king's seer, and of Nathan the prophet; for thus was the commandment of the Lord by his prophets. 26 The Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets. 27 Then

Hezekiah commanded them to offer the burnt offering on the altar. And when the burnt offering began, the song of the Lord also began, with the trumpets and with the instruments of David king of Israel. 28 So all the assembly worshiped, the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded; all this continued until the burnt offering was finished. 29 And when they had finished offering, the king and all who were present with him bowed and worshiped.

In 1864, J. W. McGarvey said that if the Bible taught instrumental music, he wanted to have the scriptures. “How, then, are we to decide whether a certain element in Jewish worship, or in the worship of heaven, is acceptable in the Christian church?

Undoubtedly we are to decide it by the teaching of the New

Testament, which is the only rule of practice for Christians.

Whatever is authorized by this teaching is right, and whatever it condemns is wrong in us, whether it belongs to the service of the Jews or the service of angels. We cannot, therefore, by any possibility, know that a certain element of worship is acceptable to God in the Christian dispensation, when the Scriptures which speak of that dispensation are silent in reference to it. To introduce any such element is unscriptural and presumptuous.”

44

• 47 scholars translated the KJV & 101 the ASV of the N.T., & all gave the meaning of this word all five times it appears the idea of “sing” (Rom. 15:9; I Cor. 14:15; James 5:13; Eph. 5:19;

Col. 3:16). Were they wrong?

Ephesians 5:19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,

O

• If it means “play an instrument,” then all would need to be equipped with some instrument.

• Actually the instrument that is to be psalloed is the heart!

Worship must be from the heart!

Psalm 19:13 Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins ; Let them not have dominion over me.

2 Peter 2:10 (There are) those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority.

They are presumptuous , self-willed.

• According to Webster, presumptuous means, "to take upon oneself without permission or authority, taking too much for granted, showing overconfidence, arrogance."

Puzzle

Answer

2 John 9 Whoever transgresses and does not abide in the doctrine of Christ does not have God. He who abides in the doctrine of Christ has both the Father and the Son.

• We can not abide in the doctrine of Christ and at the same time go beyond the doctrine of Christ to do that for which we have no authority. We can not practice instrumental music by the authority of

Christ, because Christ has nowhere authorized it, and because of this we will not have God.

1 - In Christ Alone

1.

In Christ alone my hope is found,

He is my light, my strength, my song.

This cornerstone, this solid ground,

Firm thru the fiercest drought and storm.

What heights of love, what depths of peace,

When fears are stilled, when strivings cease.

My comforter, my all in all,

Here in the love of Christ I stand!

In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,

Fullness of God in helpless babe.

This gift of love and righteousness,

Scorned by the ones He came to save.

'Til on that cross as Jesus died,

The wrath of God was satisfied,

For every sin on Him was laid.

Here in the death of Christ I live!

There in the ground His body lay,

Light of the world by darkness slain.

Then bursting forth in glorious day

Up from the grave He rose again.

And as He stands for victory,

Sin's curse has lost its grip on me.

For I am His and He is mine,

Bought with the precious blood of Christ.

No guilt in life, no fear in death,

This is the power of Christ in me.
