The West changed (1) when barbed wire emerged on
the scene. Before then, ranchers had relied on the open range,
allowing their cattle to graze freely for forage and water. The
open range posed problems for farmers because post-and-rail
fences couldn’t keep cattle out of their fields. In some places,
farmers tried natural fencing such as Osage orange hedges.
Osage orange is a bushy tree with long, wicked thorns. When
planted in a thick hedge, even a (2) range cow would
think twice about trying to (3) it. However, because
osage orange wasn’t always viable, the open range seemed a(n)
(4) part of the West.
Then, in 1874, Joseph F. Glidden invented barbed wire
and transformed the West forever. Farmers finally had a (5)
solution to the problem of protecting their land. However,
ranchers viewed the invention with (6) because barbed
wire brought an end to the open range and sense of
neverending spaces.
