A comma in writing is like a pause
inside a sentence when speaking. We
use commas inside sentences.
Commas separate parts of a sentence
into logical elements. Commas have no
meaning, but they help us to see the
structure and therefore the meaning of
the sentence.

Use a comma between items in
a series or list.
 coffee, tea, sugar, milk, eggs,
butter, salt

When you join two clauses together with a coordinating
conjunction (such as and, but, so, and or), a comma is
usually placed before the conjunction:

I could cook some supper, or we could order a pizza.
so
She was sick, so she went to the doctor.

Use a comma after words such as for example, and
finally,….
Use a comma with dates……….
Use a comma between the day and the year following the
American style for dates:
~August 18, 1950.
When writing the day as well as the date also use a comma
after the day:
~We will hold elections for class president on
Monday, January 14, 2008.

Read the following two paragraphs. Add six
commas to each paragraph.
The Haring Family
Keith Haring was born in Kutztown
Pennsylvania. He lived with his mother his father
and his three sisters. His sisters’ names were
Kay Karen and Kristen. Keith liked Kay and
Karen but Kristen was probably his favorite.
Kristen was the baby in the family. She was 12
years younger than Keith. Keith and Kristen
were always good friends.

Tokyo Pop Shop
Haring opened a Pop Shop in Tokyo on January
30, 1988. He wanted the Tokyo Pop Shop to be
successful, but it had many problems. People did
not buy Haring’s art at the Tokyo Pop Shop because
there were cheap copies everywhere. For example,
it was easy to buy T-shirts, pins, and posters with
“fake” Haring art on them. Finally, the Pop Shop in
Tokyo closed in 1989.
