With our gifts we create a Parish that welcomes all people.

30th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year B

Mark 10:46-52 Jesus is surrounded by blindness – the bewildered confusion of the twelve; the cruel reaction of the crowd, who “scolded Bartimaeus and told him to keep quiet’”; the blindness of those in Jerusalem determined to destroy him. Through his miracle, Jesus makes Bartimaeus a living sign of what he is doing in the name of his Father – healing the world’s blindness, leading the human family to see in him the truth of God’s ways...

The “faith” Jesus frequently speaks of as he works a miracle is a blessed openness that recognises in his coming that the Father’s generous plan is beginning to be realised. In contrast to those around Jesus, Bartimaeus has this openness. He is the first person in the gospel accounts to address Jesus publicly with the messianic title, “Son of David”

– a title Jesus avoided because of the political overtones it had assumed in his time. He throws off his cloak and hurries forward to ask for the miracle that had been promised as a sign of the messiah of Israel’s hopes. His readiness is instantly reward ed, and he joins the company of Jesus’ disciples. It is unusual for a person miraculously healed to be named in the gospels. Perhaps Bartimaeus was a character who became well known in the apostolic community – soon to be dramatically enlightened by the bl essings of the Saviour’s Paschal Mystery. - From a homily on the Gospel by Fr

John Thornhill sm

Bartimaeus reminds us that we have a choice. We can be blind. We can turn away from people and problems that call us to show compassion and sacrifice. Or we can ask Jesus to help us see.

But Christians sometimes focus their vision just on helping others. The good thing is that Jesus helps us see more than that – a lot more. He helps us see how valuable we are to God and how much God loves us regardless of our strengths or weaknesses. God helps us to see the good friends coming into our lives through our service and discipleship. He helps us see that we can’t help everyone.

PARISH PRAYER: We, the people of Corio/Lara Catholic Parish give thanks and praise to God the Father. By the power of the Holy Spirit, may we become more like Jesus: listening to the Word of God and celebrating the Eucharist; sharing each other’s lives and forgiving one another; respecting creation and taking responsibility for our world. Like St Francis Xavier, may we offer light to those in darkness, and warmly welcome all people. Like St Anthony of Padua, may we nourish the hungry with wise words and kind deeds. St

Francis Xavier, pray for us. St Anthony of Padua, pray for us.

Is it really true that they cannot be counted on?” It was at this gathering that the Pope John Paul II presented the WYD cross to the youth to be carried across the world as the symbol of Love of Christ. Saint of the Week – St Dimitrios : St Dimitrios (also spelt Demetrios) was a Christian and the only son of the military commander of Thessalonica, in the early 4 th century. When his father died, Dimitrios was appointed by the Emperor Maximian to take his father’s place. Maximian opposed

Christianity and directed Dimitrios to persecute and kills its followers in that city.

Instead, Dimitrios disobeyed Maximian, openly confessing to having a Christian faith and preaching about it in public. Hearing of this, the Emperor was furious and confronted the soldier in Thessalonica. It was in that confrontation that Dimitrios professed his belief, as well as expressing disgust in the notion of idol worship (a direct criticism of the Emperor himself).

The enraged Emperor cast him into prison where Dimitrios, anticipating his likely fate, arranged for his servant to sell his belongings and give the money to the poor.

An angel of God appeared to Dimitrios saying, "Peace be with thee, thou sufferer for

Christ; be brave and strong!"

After several days, the Emperor sent soldiers to the prison to kill Dimitrios. The soldiers came into the cell finding the Saint at prayer, and killed him with their spears. His buried body began producing a healing, fragrant myrrh.

Pope canonises parents of St Thérèse of Lisieux, Louis and Zelie Martin

Louis and Marie-Zelie Guerin Martin, who lived in France in the 19th Century, were the parents of the much venerated Saint Thérèse of Lisieux. (They join two other venerable sainted couples, St Joachim and St Anne, parents of the Blessed Virgin

Mary, and of course, Our Lady herself and St Joseph.)

Louis and Zelie Martin, who died in 1894 and 1887 respectively, had nine children, four of whom died at a young age, while the other five all became nuns.

The youngest, who became known as Therese of Lisieux, was reportedly described by Pope Pius X as "the greatest saint of modern times".

Sunday's ceremony to canonise the couple came two-thirds of the way through a global church council on the family, which Pope Francis is keen to hold up as the key social unit for nurturing faith and setting good examples.

"The holy spouses Louis Martin and Marie-Azelie Guerin practised Christian service in the family, creating day by day an environment of faith and love which nurtured the vocations of their daughters," the Pope said during the Mass, using

Zelie's full first name.

In an interview with Paris-Match this week, the pontiff described the couple as "evangelists ... who opened their door" to those in need in a period in which "a certain bourgeoisie ethic was contemptuous of the poor".

Close to 2,000 Catholics watched the ceremony on big screens in the Basilica of Saint Therese in Lisieux.

"It's a joyful moment," Annabella, accompanied by her husband and children, said.

"We try to follow their example, even if it's not easy. It's an example of a couple and family life with its joys, misfortunes, the loss of four children. Their example can be a staff to lean on."

BINGO: At the Xavier Centre every Friday night starting at 7.30pm. Friendly atmosphere. Great prizes. Free tea and coffee. Cool drinks and supper available for sale.
