WHY THE COMMON CORE STANDARDS?


The standards are the result of a national
movement to provide an equitable, coherent,
focused, and rigorous curriculum.
The standards will enable our students to be
college and career ready in order to compete
globally.


SHIFTS IN ASSESSMENT IN HCPSS
The Common Core will be assessed with new
innovative item structures that were not used on
previous assessments.
 Local assessments were administered within a
testing window that did not align with some
students’ needs.
 Assessments should drive daily instruction and
customizing assessments will allow for more
timely data-driven decision making.
 Teacher-designed assessments will increase
teacher knowledge of Common Core standards.

OUR NEW DIRECTION…
Avoids over-testing by replacing formal local
assessments with a menu of tasks that can be
used at the discretion of each teacher.
 Provides teachers with assessment examples to
develop their understanding of CCSS.
 Provides opportunities for students to work with
rigorous items.
 Provides models that teachers can use to develop
their own assessment items.
 Supports data conversations.

P.B.I.S. BIG IDEAS


Positive Behavior Interventions and Support is a
process for teaching children appropriate
behavior and providing the supports necessary to
sustain that behavior.
PBIS is not a curriculum- it is a framework for
systems to identify needs, develop strategies, and
evaluate practices towards success.
PBIS BIG IDEAS



Ducketts Lane has identified 3 overarching
expectations which reflect the needs of the school
community. The expectations are stated briefly and in
a positive manner.
The expectations for DLES are:
 Respectful
 Responsible
 Ready to Learn
Incentives include DLES owl feather tickets, Team
Celebrations, etc. for displaying positive behaviors
PBIS BIG IDEAS

Character Education


Character Trait lessons will occur each month with
Mrs. Miller, your school guidance counselor
Bully-Free School

Lessons and a pledge will occur with each class

Dismissal Procedures

Children are not allowed to ride any bus other than their
own AND if dismissal procedures change, you must provide
a note or contact the front office
IN NEED OF DONATIONS….

As the students are busy at work, we often go through
many supplies. We always appreciate donations of:
- index cards
- glue sticks
- scissors
- whiteboard cleaner
- tissues
- any whiteboard markers
- qt and gallon size baggies
- hand sanitizer
- magnetic tape
- velcro
** School supplies will need to be replenished throughout
the year. I would recommend stocking up on extra crayons,
glue sticks, and pencils over the summer since many stores
have specials on them. (Most students use one box of
crayons for each quarter.)
