Agenda Items for Thursday, October 8, 2015
SCHOOL OF BUSINESS, ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY
Addition
AUTO 140A VEHICLE MAINTENANCE
4 units
Prerequisites: Enrollment in or completion of Engl 400 and Math 402.
This course is intended for the incumbent worker, re-entry personal, and/or persons seeking a career
change into the automotive service industry. It is the foundation course in the Maintenance and Light
Repair (MLR) Program. Course focuses on developing workplace skills (detailed multi-point inspection
and fluid maintenance) on select vehicle subsystems. Appropriate lab activities are included. Total of 54
hours lecture and 54 hours laboratory.
Rationale: A regional skills panel was conducted with members of the Automotive Service Council of
California (ASCCA) on October 8, 2014. Based on input from the panel and detailed sales
reports generated by a sample of shops, we were able to identify the skills necessary to perform
80% of the billed labor. The National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF)
task list for Maintenance and Light Repair (MLR) was cross-referenced for compatibility. It was
determined that there is a correlation of tasks recommended by the regional skills panel and
NATEF’s MLR requirements. In order to meet future accreditation standards, the program will
be built in conjunction with NATEF requirements.
The secondary effect of the new program will be the influx of tools and equipment to modernize the
existing Automotive Technology Program. This will give students the skills to immediately fill the vacancy
that these dealership and independent repair facilities need. The growth rate is at 14% and growing as
the baby boomers are retiring.
AUTO 141 ENGINE MECHANICAL MAINTENANCE AND LIGHT REPAIR
2 units
Prerequisite: Auto 140A or one year industry experience.
Intended for the incumbent worker, re-entry personal, and/or persons seeking a career change into the
automotive service industry. Part of the Maintenance and Light Repair (MLR) program. Essential engine
theory, inspection, diagnosis, service and repair. Engine inspection and measurements with an emphasis
on in-vehicle repairs. Total of 27 hours lecture and 27 hours laboratory.
Rationale: To develop Maintenance and Light Repair skills in an individual that will allow them gainful
employment in the automotive repair industry, using the skills that have been identified by an industry
panel and relevant to 80% of the skilled tasks needed to make a repair shop profitable.

Page 10
ELTN 115 PRINTED CIRCUIT & ELECTRONIC HARDWARE DESIGN
2 units
Prerequisite: Enrollment in or completion of ELTN 130 OR MIT 101.
Introduction to Electronic Hardware and Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design and manufacturing. Design
and fabrication of PCB's with CAD software. Soldering techniques. Group system design. Total of 18
hours lecture and 54 hours laboratory.
Rationale: The purpose of this proposal is to revise outdated course content to match current technology
and software developments in response to industry advances and curricula needs. The purpose for these
changes is to move from a dwindling career target (PCB technician) to a course model which integrates
several areas including electronic hardware, Printed Circuit Board (PCB) design and rapid prototyping.
Electronic Hardware has changed radically in the past 10 years along with modern manufacturing
processes. The primary industry advances involve low cost CAD / CAM software that allows students to
develop high-quality complex PCB's. Additionally, PCB's can be manufactured through electronic file
submission or through rapid prototyping methods. Modification to Course title, SLOs, SPOs, CCOs.
Addition of MOI, MOE, assignment. Modification of catalog description, prereq/coreq.

interfacing with digital and analog systems. Total of 36 hours lecture and 54 hours laboratory.
Rationale: The purpose of this proposal is to revise outdated course content to match current technology
and software developments in response to industry advances and curricula needs. The primary industry
advances involve new low cost embedded processors and Integrated Development Environments (IDE's)
that allow rapid development of standalone control and interface systems. Additionally, more systems in
the manufacturing industry integrate embedded controls into the actual hardware, creating a new
"intelligent" component to hardware that now blends software and hardware. Course content is revised to
include current hardware and software platforms, including cloud based data collection and sharing, as is
becoming an industry practice with software revision control. Modification to course title, SLOs, SPOs,
CCOs, MOIs, MOEs, addition of assignment, modification of catalog description, prereq.
