This reflection is based on an experience about supporting a 1st year student through her placement in our ward environment.
I was made aware during our initial discussions that the student had not had experience of working in a ward before, other than skills
labs, and was very nervous about her first patient encounters. Together we looked at her learning outcomes and made a plan of how
to best achieve them with what we could offer on the ward and with as much support as I felt that she would need. I ran through the
orientation pack with her and introduced her to the ward environment and to our team. We worked together for the majority of the
time that she was on the ward and when I was not on duty, I ensured that I had handed over her supervision to another trained
member of our team. We reassessed how she was progressing at regular intervals and worked together to address any outcomes she

by offering the right level of support I can ensure that I am offering the right experiences to the students, based on their level of
training and experience. I have learned that by explaining and showing the students the evidence behind the care that we give, it gives

very keen on supporting students within our

through displaying compassion and understanding. We can only keep improving on our mentorship skills through the reflections and
feedback that we gain from our students and as such we try to maintain an atmosphere of trust and openness in order to facilitate this
dialogue.
Prioritise people; Practise effectively; Promote professionalism and trust
I received feedback from three patients on my communication and person-centred skills in caring for them during
recent episodes of care within my area.
This feedback was positive but I have chosen to reflect on it as for me it confirms good, safe and effective practice.
On receiving this feedback I was really pleased that the patients took the time to evaluate the care I had given.
I feel that my ward is so busy and I don't always have the time to devote to speaking with my patients - I can go home
after shift feeling that I have not achieved all of my own goals and the level of person-centred care I would like to give.
After receiving this feedback I have learned not to always feel so negatively about difficult and busy shifts. Despite
how I feel personally, my communication and care are appreciated by my patients. I feel this is something to focus on

focus on the positive person-centred care I can and do deliver. This has really helped me in my own practice day
to day and also to be a positive role model to other staff and students.
I know encourage my colleagues to ask for feedback on their own performance, whether from other staff
members, patients or students. As a team this has helped to improve person-centred care not only for patients
but staff too.
I feel my reflection on receiving feedback links to:
Promoting professionalism and trust
Practising effectively
Prioritising people
