The Cell Cycle
An Interactive WebQuest
•Georgia Performance
StandardS7L2: Students will
describe the structure and
function of cells, tissues,
organs, and organ systems.
Introduction
•
The Cell Theory states that all cells come from pre-existing
cells. The dividing of a cell to form new cells is part of a
cell's life cycle. The Cell Cycle is the life of a cell which
includes normal cell functioning and cell division. Some
cells in the human body will divide continuously
throughout their life, while some will never divide at
all. This webquest will guide you through the cell cycle
and lead you to a better understanding of this fascinating
process.

Next watch this video.
Task
In your research as a cellular biologist at the famed Simpson Biological
Research Institute, you have stumbled across a drawing made by the
brilliant scientist Dr. S. Woycekowski**. You have searched high and low
and have not been able to find any explanation of the drawing. Since your
recent work in studying organelles earned you a Noble Prize in Cellular
Biology, your supervisor has given you the task of learning about the cell
cycle, identifying aspects of this mysterious drawing, and demonstrating your
knowledge about the life cycle of the cell. You will conduct your research
using various websites, both informative and interactive, to complete a
WebQuest packet.
“MYSTERIOUS DRAWING”
**Dr. S. Woycekowski is the brilliant, albeit fictional founder of
the fabled Simpson Biological Research Institute,
and should not be confused with S.Woyce,
the brilliant and real 7th grade science teacher at
Simpson Middle School.
Process: To complete this web quest, you will need to follow these steps and use the
following links to answer the questions in your packet. You will have 3 class days to
complete this assignment. Some work must be completed at home. The computer lab
in the media center is open for student use at 8 a.m. You may download a copy of the
packet from my blog. Be sure to check my blog daily for important updates
Step 1: Explore the following website before beginning your packet: Cells Alive! Mitosis
Cells Alive! Cell Cycle and What is Mitosis?
Step 2: Use the Cell Cycle Graph to answer questions 1 & 2 in your packet.
Step 3: Complete the Onion Root Tip Virtual Lab.
Step 4: Before you make your root tip drawings and identifications on p. 4 of your packet, follow the link and complete
the tutorial. This link will help you in your drawings and identifications.
Onion Root Tip Tutorial
You may also use the Onion Root Tip Images for this portion of your project.
Step 5: Open the Mysterious Drawing and complete p. 4 of your web quest
Step 6: Choose 4 activities from the Mitosis Choice Board. When making your choices, you must spell "CELL" by
choosing a C, E, L, AND L activity to complete. These activities will be turned in with your completed packet. All
information can be found by following links on the Resources page.
Step 7: Once you have completed all work, be sure to read and try out the activities link on the Conclusion page. After
you have done this, complete p. 6 in your packet.
Step 8: Go to the Evaluation page and complete the Review and Quizzes activities.
EVALUATION
• Review Games and Quizzes
Mitosis Battleship Game
Mitosis Vocabulary Games
Mitosis Rags to Riches Game
Stages of the Cell Cycle Game
Conclusion
• You are just about finished with your web quest on the
Cell Cycle. At this point, I hope you have a clear
understanding of the stages of the Cell Cycle and
Mitosis. I also hope that you are asking yourself "Who
cares?!?", "Why is this important to me?", "Will I ever
really need this information in my life?" "Why should I
care about when, why and how cells divide?" It is only
when you start asking these questions that it will all
make sense to you.
• Your last mission...
• Before you complete the last page in your web quest
packet, follow this link and ask yourself Why should I
care about the cell cycle?
After you have explored this link, you will be ready to
tackle the last portion of your job as a top notch
researcher at the Simpson Biological Research Institute.
