MEMORANDUM 23 Aug 2014 Distribution List CO TrgO Cadets FLYING SCHOLARSHIP ACADEMIC TRAINING SYLLABUS 1. All cadets interested in applying for a Glider or Power Pilot Scholarship are required to complete the Flying Scholarship course. Please refer to Annex A for a schedule of classes. 2. Cadets will be given assignments on a weekly basis that will be due at the beginning of the following class. Cadets that are unable to hand in an assignment due to absence may give it to another cadet to hand in, or email it to the CGI at michelleashleyvalentine@gmail.com. The penalty for a late assignment is 10% per day to a maximum of 50%. Any assignment more tha 5 days late will not be accepted. 3. Cadets will be assessed according to a marking structure outlined in Annex B. The top cadets as of approximately November 24th will be selected to write the Canadian Forces Qualifying exam. 4. While all cadets interested are encouraged to participate, cadets must be aware that only qualified candidates can be recommended for the scholarships. The requirements are located in Annex C. 5. Due to the dynamic nature of scheduling and cadet extracurricular activities, the ground school schedule may be changed at the discretion of the TrgO or the CGI in order to facilitate the efficiency of the course. 6. The course will be held from 1000-1300 local time at LHQ. Cadets are expected to arrive 5 minutes before the start of class. Cadets arriving late will not be permitted to class unless prior arrangements with the instructor have been made. Dress for the course is appropriate civilian attire. 7. All candidates are expected to bring writing utensils and reference materials to every class. Unpreparedness is subject to removal from the class. 8. All cadets applying for the course are required to fill out and return the cadet information sheet found in Annex D. 9. All applicants must sell a minimum of 2 lottery ticket books, be involved in a minimum of one squadron team or activity, and maintain a high level of dress, deportment and level training throughout the year to be eligible for the qualifying exam. 10. Names for the exam must be submitted in November. Therefore, cadets will be chosen based on (approximately): -First 5 assignments -First 3 quizzes -Term Test 1 -Attendance and Participation up to the appropriate date The number of slots available for the squadron is TBA. One spare will be sent to write each exam in the event that one of the main candidates cannot attend the course for any reason. After the main candidates and spare are chosen, the rest of the marks will determine the priority list numbers that the cadets are assigned for summer training. Participation and attendance is based on all mandatory squadron activities (parade nights, 3 tagging shifts, Remembrance Day ceremonies and the survival ex) as well as ground school classes. Extra marks will be given to those that go beyond the minimum Squadron requirements. Annex C 23 Aug 2014 REQUIREMENTS FOR GLIDERAND POWER SCHOLARSHIPS Glider Pilot Scholarship (GPS) requirements: (With respect to CATO 54-26) a. b. c. d. e. f. g. Age – minimum 16 and not be 19 before the end of the course; Medical standard – TC Category 3 Medical Certificate; Education – have successfully completed Grade 9 or equivalent no later than the nomination date; Air cadet training – must be undergoing LHQ Level 3 training by the nomination deadline of the current training year and successfully complete LHQ level 3 by 30 Jun of the current training year; Qualifying examination with a pass mark of 50% Air cadet narrative – each candidate must explain, in a one-page narrative, why he/she would like to participate in the Glider Pilot Scholarship. Physical limitations: Height Weight Minimum 4’6”/137.16 cm 90 lbs/40.82 kg Maximum 6’3”/190.5 cm 200 lbs/90.72 kg Power Pilot Scholarship (PPS) requirements: (With respect to CATO 54-27) a. b. c. d. e. f. g.
