Welcome to Ridge Soaring Glider Port
Ridge Soaring Gliderport (FAA LID: 79N) is an FAA approved airport and
public-use glider port located two nautical miles (4 km) southwest of the central
business district of Unionville, in Centre County, Pennsylvania, midway between
Altoona and Lock Haven in the Bald Eagle Valley and approximately 20 minutes
from Penn State University. This FBO airport is world famous for ridge, thermal
and wave soaring. It is privately owned by Knauff & Grove, Inc. Doris Grove and
Tom Knauff have successfully operated the glider port and catalog business
since 1975. They have set nine world soaring records and more than 60
national records. They have written the most popular glider flight training
manuals, are frequent speakers at soaring events and contributors of articles in
Soaring magazine. They founded the youth scholarship program, Petersburg
Wave camp, and the Senior Soaring Championships.
Tom's FAA CFI Revalidation Clinic is recognized as one of the very best, and the
FAA awarded him the honor of Flight Instructor of the Year for the Eastern
Region. He has been nominated several times for the prestigious Brewer Award
given by the NAA to the outstanding Aviation Educator. Tom was National Open
Class Champion in 1989 and the recipient of the Robert Kronfeld Trophy for the
longest glider flight ever flown in a world soaring championship.
