• APA regulates:
– Stylistics
– In-text citations
– References

used in the paper)
Manual Updates
• There have been a number of
modifications, updates, and additions to
the 5th edition of the APA Publication
Manual (© 2001).
• While most of the basic guidelines
remain unchanged, some new rules are
presented in the 6th edition (© 2010).

Double-Spaced the lines.
Standard paper 8.5 * 11 inches (A4).
One inch margin from all sides.
Use 10-12 pt.
Times New Roman font or a similar font.
Only black toner.

• Pages should be numbered beginning
with the title page in the header upper
right corner.
• Reference list should begin in a separate
page at the end, under the label (
References ), No quotation marks or
underlining etc.
• Appendixes and Notes should be
formatted as references.

include four major
sections:
References
Main Body
Abstract
Title page
Handling Quotation in Text
Using APA Format follow:
• Author, Date method in Citation.
(Author’s last name, Year of publication)
• In Paraphrasing an idea from other
work, make a reference to the author,
year of publication and page’s number
(although it is not required).

• In Direct quoting from a work, you need
to include author, year of publication and
page’s number.
• If there is no author to the cite, such as
web page without an author, use
abbreviation version to the title page in
quoting marks.

• If you are citing to a work that has no author
nor date, then use the first few words from the
title then the abbreviation (n.d.) form (no date).
• Personal communications, emails and
pricate interviews should be referenced in
your text but NOT in references’ list.
To cite it: provide initials and last name of the
communicator, the words “personal
communication” and the exact date.

• Capitalize proper nouns, author’s name.
• If you refer to title of source :
 Capitalize all words that are four letters or greater.




Capitalize both hyphenated compound words
Capitalize the first word after colon or dash.
Italicize the title of longer works, as books.
Put quotation marks around the title of shorter
works , as journals.
General Formatting citation in
the text
• If a work has two authors, cite both names.
• If a work has three, four or five authors, cite
them all in the first time, then the next time just
cite the first author plus (et al.)
• If a work has six or above authors, cite the
last name of the first author plus (et al.)
Short Quotations
• To indicate quotation of fewer than 40
words, enclose it with double quotation
marks “ ”.
 Provide the author, year and page.
 Provide complete reference in
references’ list.
Long quotations
• Quotation longer than 40 words,
should be in free-standing block with NO
quotation’s marks.
 Start in new line.
Leave 5 spaces from the left margin
and write the entire quotation in the
new margin.
