Biology – Section 7.1 (page 182): Cell Discovery and Theory
Objectives – Students will be able to:

Summarize the principles of the cell theory

Relate advances in microscope technology to discoveries about cells

Differentiate between a prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell.
Directions: Read section 7.1 in your textbook then complete the following items below.
1. On a separate sheet of paper create a timeline of the history of the cell theory.
Your timeline should include the year, the discovery, a small illustration, and the
responsible scientist. Your timeline should include the work of the following
scientists: Hans and Zacharias Janssen, Robert Hooke, Anton van Leeuwenhoek,
Matthias Schleiden, Theodor Schwann, Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch, Ernest
Everett Just, Lynn Margulis, and the scanning tunneling microscope.
On the same sheet of paper you drew your timeline answer the following questions:
2. List the three principles of the cell theory.
3. Explain how the development and improvement of microscopes changed the study of
living organisms.
4. Compare and contrast a light microscope and an electron microscope.
5. Define: plasma membrane and organelles.
6. Compare and contrast prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
