L/O: Who are the biggest contributors to global
warming?
Is enough being done to address the problem?
Think/Pair/share
Predict:
• Which are the top 5 nations contributing to
CO2 emissions?
• Why did you select these 5 countries? Justify.
What is CO2 per capita?
Could this make a
difference to
emissions?
To what extent are
CO2 emissions
related to
population size?
Now predict the top 5 countries per
capita (CO2 per person)?
• Using the x2 resources emailed to you write in the actual
emission figures
Sources:
• Guardian_Climate_Change_Atlas (see wisdom)
• CO2 emissions data table
• Q: Why do you think the CO2 per capita lists are so
different for the top5 producers of CO2?
• Q: What advice would you give to those Governments
trying to cut down their country’s overall CO2 emissions?
So what is being done to ensure that
greenhouse gas emissions are reduced
worldwide?
What is the Kyoto Protocol agreement?
The Kyoto Protocol
• An international agreement linked to the United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change,
which commits its Parties by setting internationally
binding emission reduction targets.
• Adopted 1997
• Came into force 2005
Kyoto Basics
• Industrialised economies – reduce GHG by 5% of
their 1990 level by 2008-2012
• Richer countries can trade in GHG emissions or
invest in cleaner-energy projects in developing
economies in order to gain “carbon credits” that
they can then offset against their quota.
• Poorer countries do not have binding emissions
targets. They make a general pledge to avoid
pollution.
Has it worked?
• “The Kyoto protocol has failed to have any meaningful
impact on global carbon emissions and has been a waste of
time and effort”.
Is the above statement fair?
