1. Explain the difference between general-purpose and specialized applications. Also discuss the
common features of application programs, including those with traditional and ribbon graphical
user interfaces.

General purpose applications include: word processors, spreadsheets, presentation
graphics, and database management systems. Specialized application are programs that
focused more on specific disciplines and occupations such as Graphics Programs and
Web Authoring programs. The traditional GUI comes from older softwares (Windows XP
or Windows 7) and word processor (Windows 8) or any other newer programs that run
Microsoft offices suites, like “Word processor 2013; which has the ribbon graphical
user’s interfaces.
2. Discuss general-purpose applications including word processors, spreadsheets, database
management systems, and presentation graphics.

The word processor is an application that’s is text base, and includes documents such
as; letters, memos, or faxes. Word processing programs include: Microsoft Word, Corel
WordPerfect, Apple Pages, OpenOffice Writer, and Google Docs. Spreadsheets is an
applications used to organize, analyze, and graph numeric data. Some programs include:
Microsoft Excel, Apple Numbers, and OpenOffice Calc. Presentation Graphic application
like Microsoft PowerPoint, OpenOffice Impress, and Apple Keynote, are programs use to
create visual presentation by combining a variety of visual objects. Database
Management Systems (DBMS) is a collection of related data that is stored in a virtual
electric file cabinet. Microsoft Access and OpenOffice Base are the two most used
systems of DBMS.
3. Discuss specialized applications, including graphics programs, web authoring programs, and
other professional specialized applications

Specialized application focus more on disciplines and occupations. Graphic Programs are
programs that use many visual and graphic editing application, and such programs
include: Desktop Publishing Programs, Image Editing Programs, Image Galleries, and
Illustration Programs are all part of graphic programs. Desktop Publishing programs mix
text and graphics to create brochures, newsletters, newspapers, and textbook. Some of
the most known programs for Desktop Publishing Programs are: Adobe InDesign,
Microsoft Publisher, and QuarkXPress. Image Editor programs like Adobe Photoshop
,Corel Paint Shop Proor Windows Live Photo Gallery, are use to edit, modify, or clear up
digital photographs. Adobe Illustrator, CorelDraw, or Inkscape, are Illustration Programs
used to draw, create and edit geometric shapes and objects by connecting lines and
curves by defined mathematical equations. Image Galleries (Stock photographs and Clip
Art) are libraries of electronic images used for a variety of other applications to provide
visual interest. Web Authoring programs are used to create web sites (Blogs and
graphical site map) and features (Animations HTML editors).
4. Describe mobile apps, including popular apps and app stores.

Mobile apps are add-on application for smartphones or tablet. Apple has over 500,000
apps for iPhone and iPad’s that consist of videos, media, games, QR codes, and social
networking’s. T two other types of app from Google Play and Window Phone
Marketplace.
5. Describe software suites, including office suites, cloud suites, specialized suites, and utility
suites.

Software suites are a bundles of separate application programs purchase together as a
group. Office suites contain generalize-application such as Microsoft Office, Apple
iWork, or OpenOffice. Cloud suites like Google Docs (Making IT Work for You), Zoho,
Microsoft Web Apps are apps accessible through the Interent. Corel Draw Graphics Suite
X6 and Moneyfree Software TOTAL Planning Suite are two Specialized suites. Two
Utility suites are called Norton Systems Works and Norton Internet Security suite.
