Job Profile Job title Web Developer Responsible to Senior Project Manager Responsible for NA Job purpose To contribute to the development of CIPD’s web presence by working with internal colleagues and external developers to conceptualise, design, build, deploy, test, release and support CIPD websites and web applications. Key accountabilities 1 Translate designs into standards-compliant HTML/CSS and, as necessary, JavaScript to create the desired functionality 2 Maintain existing web applications and contribute to the development of new systems in C#.Net 3 Work with members of the Marketing department and product owners to create and develop HTML/CSS themes for promotional campaign pages and micro sites 4 Take part in the testing of websites and web applications to ensure cross-browser, cross-platform, cross-device compatibility and search engine index-ability 5 Work with the Senior Project Manager to plan and implement an ongoing programme of code optimisation to improve page load times, web page efficiency and search engine rankings 6 Provide second-line web support ensuring that any assigned issue/query is managed through to resolution 7 Analyse new web requests/enhancements and propose solutions identifying specific tasks required and providing time estimates for production 8 Work with Information System Services (ISS) Project Managers and other key stakeholders to define web development projects, feasibility and approach, producing detailed specification documents as required with clear project deliverables and timelines 9 Contribute to the development and implementation of organisational web policies and standards 10 Keep up to date with emerging technologies and industry trends and seek opportunities to integrate them into activities Job profile - August 2013 Nature and scope The role of the job holder is to contribute to the ongoing development, maintenance and support of CIPD’s websites and web applications with a focus on front-end development. You’ll have core design and UI/UX experience as well as more general technical .NET web development skills. You’ll be a creative problem-solver, keen to enhance the functionality and user experience of our websites and web applications. This is a particularly exciting time as we’re working with a number of external developers in order to develop the website and extend the use of our web content management platform, Tridion, throughout the business. You’ll have the opportunity not only to get involved with development projects but also to drive the website and use of Tridion forward beyond this externally-supported development stage. You’ll play an active role within web projects from initial requirements through to successful delivery, and will develop a thorough understanding of our audience and our overall strategy. You’ll work closely with ISS project managers, internal colleagues with web responsibilities and external developers. In particular, utilising your HTML, CSS and JavaScript expertise, you’ll bridge the gap between back-end developers and creative design teams to produce and maintain visually attractive cross-platform websites and web applications. The job holder should have a solid understanding of web application development processes from the layout/user interface to relational database structures. The ideal candidate will have the ability to write standards-based, semantically correct HTML and CSS following SEO best practices. Technical skills should also include ASP.Net, C#, SQL JavaScript and JQuery. They should be knowledgeable on usability and accessibility issues and standards and have a commitment to continuous improvement and change. Experience of developing for content-managed websites is desirable, as is knowledge of the SDL Tridion Web CMS, exposure to mobile/tablet development and an understanding of API’s and web services. The jobholder should have a customer-focused approach and be able to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. They should be able to work in a collaborative team environment as well as being self-motivated and comfortable working autonomously and with less technical colleagues. They’ll need good organisation skills to manage a varied workload and work to deadlines.
