RDG 990: Advanced Reading Final Project: “Thinking, Intelligence, and Language” MWF Class PROJECT GUIDELINES Overview: You will use strategies from Chapter 10 (pg. 689) in Opening Doors to select and organize information from a Psychology textbook. In other words you will be using various note-taking strategies to glean relevant information from “Thinking, Intelligence, and Language” at the end of the textbook, pages 243277. I will model some notes in class but you are required to complete your notes as homework. You will take an open-note test on information found in “Thinking, Intelligence, and Language” during your final exam period. Description: You will preview, read, and take notes in various forms on “Thinking, Intelligence, and Language” using strategies and information from “Using Textbook Features”, pg. 692. Some important features to be aware of are: Chapter Outlines, Chapter Objectives and Introductions, Boxes, Tables, Graphic Aids, Vocabulary Aids, Study Questions and Activities and Chapter Summaries. See pages 692-3 for a handy summary of this information. You will take notes in the Cornell/Outline Formats, with some highlighting/annotating and mind mapping where indicated. Turn your notes in with your test on exam day. You will be evaluated on the completeness of your notes as well as how you interpreted the notes on the test. In other words, how well you answered the questions on the test and how effectively your notes helped you to find the answers. Before Day One (For Homework): Preview “Thinking, Intelligence, and Language” Read PREVIEW, on the top of pg. 243. Read the SUMMARY on pgs. 275-276 Read Section Titles Read Sub Titles Look at and read all the captions for the pictures and figures Note “Self Quiz” at the conclusions of each section Note key terms defined in margins Note key terms and self-test on pgs. 276-277 Day One: Monday (4/21/14) o Preview “The Cognitive Revolution in Psychology” o Take Notes: Underline, Highlight & Annotate “The Cognitive Revolution in Psychology” pp. 243-5 (I will provide a handout of these pages). o Preview “Thinking” pages 245-255. Note key terms in the margins. o Take Notes: Using the Cornell Note Taking System, take notes with me on “Thinking”. o Continue the Cornell Notes for homework. Day Two: Wednesday 4/23/14) In class Application Exercises—We will explore some of the supplementary material provided in the text and from other resources in order to apply what we’ve learned by reading the text. These exercises will give you practice in answering the application style questions on an exam. Group Participation Points will be awarded to students who come to class and participate in a group with classmates. These points cannot be made up any other way. Day Three: Friday (4/25/14) o Preview “Intelligence” pages 255-266. Note key terms in the margins o Take Notes: Using the Cornell Note Taking System, take notes with me on “Intelligence”. o Continue the Cornell Notes for homework. Final Exam Day (Monday, 5/5/14; 9:10 to 11:10 a.m.) TAKE A TEST ON “Thinking, Intelligence, and Language”! The test will include multiple choice, short answer, matching and a fill-in-the-chart item. The test will cover concepts and terms presented in the chapter. The notes are worth 50 points and the test 50 points for a total of 100 points for this project. There will be an extra credit portion of the test that will cover application of the concepts presented in the chapter.
