Summer Reading (Regular English students read one book and do one project. Honors English students must read both the regular and honors books and do one regular project and the honors project.) 9th grade: Regular: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley Honors: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen 10th grade: Regular: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte Honors: Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys 11th grade: Regular: The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck Honors: The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls 12th grade: Regular: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath Honors: Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf Book projects ***Required for ALL REGULAR English classes (please choose one project) 1. Write a complete description (physical, emotional, relational) of three of the characters in the book. Draw a portrait to accompany each description. 2. Use magazine photos to make a poster board collage about the story. On the back of the poster, write a short description (2-3) sentences of each photo. 3. Write a different ending to your story. Your ending must be at least 5 paragraphs long. Typed in 12pt font and double spaced. Please include a short summary (5-7 sentences) of your book. 4. Construct a diorama (three-dimensional scene which includes models of people, buildings, plants, and animals) of one of the main events of the book. Include a written description (5-7 sentences) of the scene. 5. Write a diary that one of the story’s main characters might have kept before, during, or after the book’s events. Remember that the character’s thoughts and feelings are very important in a diary. Include at least 10 entries (5-7 sentences each) Honors Project Every student should keep a summary journal throughout the process of reading the book. There should be one entry for every chapter read. This entry should be at least a strong paragraph (6-8 sentences). This should be done on notebook paper and stapled together, with the chapters summarized clearly marked.
