LESSON PLAN 4– Trueman Nottingham Class level High Intermediate Classroom Progress expectation Subject Topic Aim Objective Knowledge assumed Material & equipment Learning assessment Post lesson notes Lesson February 27, date 2015 Elebaires Classroom Lesson 1 hour duration I expect Luis, a High Intermediate Student, to prove that he knows the vocabulary words that I have prepared. If he does not know them, he should at least be able to match them word to definition. He should also be able to use these vocabulary words to fill in the transcript of a lecture by a science writer about parasitic organisms. He will then have to write his own science fiction story about parasites taking over humans, based on a beginning I have provided for him. Science vocabulary, parasites in both nature and science fiction culture. Learning new science vocabulary. Using science vocabulary learned at the beginning of the class in a transcription of a video. Learning about parasites in nature from a lecture by science writer Ed Yong. Then watching a movie trailer to see how these parasites have been adopted into science fiction/popular culture. I would like Luis to be able to use this information to help him with his interests ie science/science fiction. The lesson should also help improve his vocabulary Student should attempt to learn the vocabulary assigned to him as well as use this vocabulary to help him understand the video on parasites. He knows about bugs/parasites, and has seen these incorporated into science fiction culture. Video clip of “The Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” video of Ed Yong’s talk on parasites, and a worksheet corresponding to Ed Yong’s lecture as well as the beginning of a story that Luis must then continue for 10 lines. He will have a vocab quiz twice throughout the lesson to test his retention of the vocab list. Then he will write a short story to show his proficiency in the past tense, and finally we will engage in discussion about the parasite talk to test what he understood/what he needs more help with -The lesson did go to plan. Timing of activities was good. Vocab list was of a good difficulty, but the definitions were too difficult to understand. Next time I will make the definitions of the words more accessible. -The writing exercise was very effective. Luis had issues sticking to the past tense so using it to check his proficiency with grammar worked out very well -Ed Yong video was far too long. Decided to use just the first 3 minutes, but to watch it twice. Worked very well Tasks Teacher activity Warm-up Engage in discussion conversation just getting to with the know each student other Matching new Allow student vocabulary to work for a words to their while, help if definitions necessary Phase Duration Topic Student activity Resources 1 5 min. Shows great enthusiasm for learning and responds very well to challenges. He showed issues using the past tense consistently, especially when writing. Speaks much better than he does writing. Overall great lesson
