Ethics are rules that help us tell the difference between right and wrong Based on values Values are – what we think is important These help us decide between right and wrong decisions. Do you value Friendship? If so, would you: Steal from a friend Lie on a friend Betray a friend Your answers to the previous questions are an example of how your Morals are developed. Morals are – Rules you use to decide what’s good and what’s bad. Morals and Values work together to create an Ethical Code or a set of behaviours/principles that people, institutions and businesses abide by. Does this school have a Code of Ethics? Refer to text page 78 for the Rogers Communications Inc. Official Code of Ethics Tough problems or questions that have to do with morality and ethics are known as Ethical Dilemmas. There are ALWAYS potential “right” and “wrong” answers. When a business makes a decision that weighs it’s morals and values against it’s profitability, it runs into a Ethical Dilemma. Downsizing of Staff Dealing with harmful environmental chemicals Antitrust issues Employee rights Discrimination against women/minorites In business, there is a model that we can follow in order to make the BEST decision possible. Who will be Helped by the decision? Who will be Harmed by the decision? What are the pros of the decision? What are the cons of the decision? Will the decision survive the test of time?
