General Directions Regarding Reporting Events




Please list each event only once and in one category only (e.g., you must decide whether a social event that has
a speaker and includes a silent auction is best considered a social event or a scholarship event—it should not be
listed in both categories). You may, however, note in your description of the event that such event touched
upon more than one category (e.g., in the “Athletic Events” category or in the “Scholarship Events” category,
you might indicate: “At our NCAA tournament game-watching parties, we held 50/50 raffles, the proceeds of
which went to our club’s scholarship fund”).
If your club hosted similar, repetitive events such as a game-watching parties or happy hours, please list each
type of event only once and indicate in the description the number of times it was held (e.g., “Hosted gamewatching parties at club sponsor bar for all twelve (12) U-M football games (20-50 attendees on average)”).
Please do not include AAUM-organized events such as away-game events or the Go Blue tailgate in Ann Arbor,
unless there was collaboration in planning and hosting with your club.
If your club organized and/or participated in an event that was primarily organized or co-organized by another
organization (e.g., U-M Office of Development, U-M Office of Undergraduate Admissions, U-M Athletic
Department, U-M Black Alumni, alumni groups of the Ross School of Business or U-M Law School, another
AAUM regional club, a Big Ten alumni group or consortium), please identify that organization and your club’s
level of involvement in the particular event.

2. Over the past year, our club hosted at least one family-friendly event: (Check One)
☐ Yes
☐ No
If the answer to the question above is “yes”, please describe the family-friendly events, including the date and location of
same:
July 18, 2014 – San Francisco Zoo Wolverine Exhibit Event
Our club was invited by the San Francisco Zoo to attend the new wolverine exhibit opening to the public. The
event was televised and alums were on the news singing the fight song. Roughly 100 people attended the event
including families, retirees, and even some students who were located in the San Francisco Bay Area for a
summer internship. We were able to engage alumni who had not participated in an event in years by hosting a
family friendly event. The zoo allowed us to stay and tour the property free-of-charge after the event. We hope
to host another event like this in the coming year!
The picnic (1/31/15), hike (3/22/15), and bonfire (5/30/15) were targeted at young alums, but engaged alums of
all ages, including family members. Several of the game watch locations are family friendly and advertised as
such in the weekly email communications.
3. Describe below how your club has been “A-Maize-ing” in celebrating the U-M spirit over the past year, including holding
any successful athletic or social events or building new programs that you were particularly proud of or that showcased
your club’s innovative approach to building spirit. Please limit your response to 250 words.
Response:
We have focused our time on a number of different initiatives to spur engagement and eventual membership in
the association. Our strategy is to first pique the interest with unique, intriguing social, community, and athletic
events. We drastically increased the size of our board and created committees aligning to each brand pillar to
focus our efforts in these targeted areas. This model has allowed our board members to decrease stress and
work as a team to complete all associated tasks with planning an event.
Recent alums have been moving out to the Bay Area in larger numbers than ever before. We recognized this
and created a separate branch to focus solely on this demographic, the Young Alumni Council. The Council has
planned a few incredible events, including bonfires, picnics, and a hike. It’s imperative to devise programs that
not only spur the “Go Blue” attitude but incorporate all aspects of what it means to be a Michigan alum. It
starts with giving back, and I cannot tell you how selfless the SF Alumni Club is in terms of helping each other
and truly representing what it means to Bleed Maize and Blue.
We are also proud of recognizing the desire for career development programs among our alumni base and
producing several related events (see #27).
We are in the process of developing a mentoring pilot program, which proves testament to this belief, and I
cannot wait to see it come to fruition in the coming year.

5. Describe how your club has been “A-Maize-ing” in seeking out and holding learning events, webinars, or other
development activities that enable alumni to take a fresh look at the world and leverage their special connection to U-M.
Please limit your response to 250 words.
Response:
This year, we hosted Frank Lieberman, author of Bo’s Warriors (Stories about Bo Schembechler). This event had
many members reminiscing about their days at school and taught others about Bo’s era. The stories are about
the past, when Michigan football was coached by Bo Schembechler and when his team’s had unprecedented
success. Through the eyes of his players (Frank Gusich, Jim Brandstatter, Jim Betts, Tom Curtis, Mike Keller, Fritz
Seyferth, Thom Darden, Reggie McKenzie) , and coach Gary Moeller, their story is told. These impressive
individuals illustrate Bo’s coaching methods and how each dealt with their love-hate relationship with him. Their
evolution was noted along with the consequences of their unselfish contributions to the University, to the
Wolverine tradition and to college athletics nationwide. We will continue to seek out great opportunities like
this one in the coming year!

MEMBERSHIP
A strong membership reflects the effectiveness of the Alumni Association and clubs and provides crucial volunteer and
financial resources.
In conjunction with its upcoming bicentennial, U-M is in the midst of the Victors for Michigan campaign and all
University units, including AAUM, are participating. One of the Association’s primary campaign goals is increasing
Association membership. Increasing membership allows us to provide even more robust programming to our alumni,
increased scholarships to current and prospective students, and an even stronger global alumni network. AAUM’s
regional clubs will play a pivotal role in accomplishing this goal, and their enhanced participation in supporting AAUM’s
membership efforts is vital to the campaign’s success. We appreciate your help.
7. Over the past year, our club has included information and/or graphics promoting the new club membership campaign
(i.e. that clubs will directly receive back a percentage of each new membership they help acquire) via our listserv
messages and social media channels on approximately the following number of occasions:

17. Apart from the information you provided above, please describe your club’s specific efforts to increase AAUM
membership over the past year, and what, if any, unique benefits the club gave to members (e.g. hosting recruiting
events; promoting membership in written and oral communications; offering tangible benefits to members at club
events, such as a free appetizer or drink or a member-only giveaway):
We have advertised membership benefits via Unite in all club emails and using social media blasts. We recently
found that the email campaign works better when the verbiage is embedded in the actual event
communication, rather than at the bottom of the long club email (we changed our advertising technique with
the Dick Costolo event and saw improved results). We have also used the membership coasters, posters, and
table tents at any event possible to try to engage alums. We have offered member / non-member price
differentiation and giveaways (shirts, luggage tags, pins), but have not typically tried to use food or drink as a
benefit. The main issue with food and drink is that our events are not often hosted.

means through which we can engage alumni and allow them to harness the network of the great Michigan alumni

27. Describe how your club has been “A-Maize-ing” in seeking out and developing new opportunities for career
development, working to recruit and engage new members, and promoting your organization through innovative means
to members and the broader community. Please limit your response to 250 words.
Response:
In January, we hosted a successful career development event by welcoming Michigan alumnus, Brian Rumao,
the Chief of Staff to the CEO at LinkedIn, to share the top ways to maximize your LinkedIn experience. This
session was designed for every professional - from those happily employed to those seeking their next
opportunity.
Following the LinkedIn Presentation, we introduced a panel of local recruiting experts to share what companies
are looking for in potential candidates. Attendees learned what qualities make professionals attractive in a
crowded market as well as warning signs that a particular position may not be a good fit.
Dick Costolo, former CEO of Twitter, joined the group for a fireside chat in April. During the event he shared
intimate details about his past and inspiring advice for young professionals. We also welcomed the AAUM
President, Steve Grafton, to emcee the event and lead the Q&A with Dick.
Through the Dick Costolo event we were able to engage with the University to develop a list of local, influential
alumni that we plan to utilize for years to come. We received overwhelmingly positive feedback for both events
and were able to engage alumni that had not attended a club sponsored event in several years.

building and maintaining a proud tradition of community service, or developing new ways to engage with the greater
community in your region. Please limit your response to 250 words.
Response:
While realizing the expensive price tag for an out-of-state education at UM, we are proud to foster a group of
students from the Bay Area who still manage to successfully attend UM despite having "high need" and pleased
that our modest scholarship does make a difference. As we continue to build our endowment, we will only grow
and improve from there. In addition to the scholarship for an incoming student, we have been able to provide
continuing student stipends to our past recipients who remain in good standing at UM.
Over the past year, the Community Service co-chairs have created events that brought a diverse group of Bay Area
alumni together. We held an event every other month and had about 10-15 participants at each. The events we
hosted included cleaning up and landscaping local parks, helping out at a dog shelter, and packaging food for those
in need with the food bank. At our Annual Community Service Day Event our volunteers painted a technology help
center in collaboration with Rebuilding Together SF. The events generated increased interest in the Alumni Club
as well, with one participant inquiring about joining the board, others offering ideas for future events and others
requesting more events of the same nature in order to stay connected. Overall, it was a highly successful year
and we hope to continue next year!
