Hospitality
Unit Name
Food Studies 1
(Safe Food Practices )In this unit students will look at the practical application of the food service
industry. The students will spend time learning about food handling, kitchen safety and preparing
restaurant quality meals as well as planning and implementing their own menus.
(Cake Decorating) They will also learn to plan, create and evaluate their own novelty cake. They
students will also be assessed on their participation in a school based event where they will organise
and serve the food for the event.
Cost: There is a $50 charge to cover the costs of consumables

Master Chef
Students will look at the fame and excitement surrounding Masterchef and other cooking shows.
The students will complete a 2 course menu where they will be judged on the taste and
presentation of their food by their teacher and their peers.
(Fast Food Service) Students will also spend this time learning about serving the community. The
students will learn to set a table, fold napkins and serve customers in a restaurant situation.
Cost: There is a $50 charge to cover the costs of consumables

(Multicultural Australia) Students will have the opportunity to learn about the various cultural
groups that co-exists harmoniously in Australia. They will get the opportunity to look at the key
role played by food in uniting people and cook various popular dishes from selected cultures.
(Aussie, Aussies, Aussie) They will also learn about the popular Australian foods and the history
behind it. They will also learn about the bush foods and the nutritional value of bush foods.

Pop Art
The students will explore the world of pop culture and pop art, focusing on four pop artists; Andy
Warhol, Keith Haring, Roy Lichtenstein and Claes Oldenburg. Students will learn and apply skills of
block painting, deconstruct Pop Art and delve into the minds of Pop artists to gain an
understanding of this topic.

Description:
Students will learn about the purpose, mediums and techniques, such as dot painting, x-ray and
bark, of indigenous Australians. They will also explore iconography of indigenous art as well as
contemporary society and create a series of artworks based traditional aboriginal techniques.

Students are to learn about effective photography and take interest shots for the local area. They
choose 5 favourite photographs and reproduce each of them as a painting and as a drawing to

In this unit students will focus in depth on the design process that will lead to the construction of a
small free choice project made primarily out of wood. Assessment will be a major design folio and
a small project. The unit will run in Semester One and is open to any student in Year 9 or 10.

This unit will primarily focus on the drawing of, production and evaluation of a small free choice
project made from wood. A greater emphasis will be n making with a lesser emphasis on
designing. This unit will run in Semester Two and is open to any student in Year 9 or 10.

Description:
This unit of study is the first part of a two unit program. This unit will focus in depth on the design
process that will lead to the construction of a free choice project made primarily out of wood.
Assessment in this unit will be the first part of a major design folio. This unit will run in Semester
One and is a pre-requisite for wanting to go into Design and Technology 4. It is open to any
student in Year 9 or 10.

Description:
This unit is the second part of a two unit program. This unit will continue on from Design and
Technology 3 by focussing on the techniques and skills that are required to complete the fee
choice article they designed in Unit 3. Assessment in this unit will be a completed major design
folio and a completed free choice project. This unit will run in Semester Two and is open to any
student in Year 9 or 10 who completed Design and Technology 3.

Students will learn the basics of Chinese Language through conversation dialogue. It is a language
that is easier to learn than most other languages because there are no rules of grammar. They will
also learn about the richness of Chinese Culture.

Students will expand their knowledge of the Chinese Language and Culture from Chinese Language
and Culture 1. They will further expand their base knowledge of Chinese Characters beyond basic
conversation words.

NOTE: Students will have the opportunity to be involved in a community partnership with Nitmiluk
Tours, which will provide them with a possible pathway into the tourist / hospitality industry.

Description:
This course will be conducted in term 3 and 4, Semester 2, 2014. The unit Physical Activity and
Sports Studies will examine a number of topics including the structure and function of the human
body relating to exercise, nutrition for activity and coaching. Students will also participate in a
number of sports such as tennis, basketball, soccer and hockey. Students choosing this elective
are expected to fully participate in appropriate attire, in all practical classes and to satisfactorily
complete all theoretical and practical assessments.

Description:
This unit explore design and creative in Information technology. It will be web based with
independent learning weaved into the program. There will be problem solving and group projects.
The major projects include creating a Do it Yourself interactive projector using an old projector
and wii remote and exploring the programming possibilities of the Raspberry Pi. Students will then
identify a need within the school community and use skills gained to address the need using
innovative and creative techniques.

Description:
This subject will have practical and theoretical components. Students will develop their skills on
their chosen instrument (keyboard, guitar and drum kit supplied), and play cover songs and their
own compositions in a small ensemble. They will develop their theoretical understanding of music
to support their practical skills. Those who intend to take Music at Year 11 will study music theory
to the required level. Students must have their own musical instrument so they can practice at
home.
Note: Students can join the class in any semester. Student work independently building upon the
skills they have already developed. Small ensemble work will be completed with students of
similar level.
