AP CHEMISTRY
2014-2015
Ms. Julia Riley
jsriley@fcps.edu
This year I will further explain the subject of Chemistry and prepare you be successful on the AP Chemistry Exam. This course will
focus only on the items tested on the current AP exam. Many topics covered in your text book will not be covered or tested in class
since they will not be tested on the AP exam.
The AP Chemistry exam is scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2015.
Classroom Rules:
 You are expected to arrive on time for all classes.
 If you are absent or tardy, it is your responsibility to find out what you have missed, including classwork and any
assignments. All assignments and worksheets will be available on blackboard.
 You are expected to be considerate and respectful of both me and other students in the class.
 Cell phones are expected to be out of sight and not in use unless told otherwise
Books: Zumdahl: Chemistry 7th edition. You do not need to bring your books to class
Materials
I expect you to have the following supplies in class at all times.
 Binder
 Hand held pencil sharper (optional)
 Paper
 Pencils
 Scientific Calculator
 Composition
book(for labs)

Pen (blue or black ink only)
Blackboard and Online References
Course information and assignments will be available on Blackboard. If you have issues accessing Blackboard for my class, please do
not hesitate to let me know
There are many chemistry references available online. Please visit my class on Blackboard and click on Chem References or External
Links to see a list of recommended reference links.
Grading – Quarter Grades
I use a total points system to determine your grades. You will earn points from tests, quizzes, labs, projects, classwork and homework
assignments. Your grade will be calculated as follows: Points earned / Points possible.
All in class quizzes and tests will be timed. Approximately 2 tests will be given per quarter. Tests will have both multiple choice
and free response questions. Questions about labs performed will also appear on the tests. You must use a pencil in the multiple
choice section. You will not be allowed the use of a calculator or any electronic device on the multiple choice section of the test.
You must complete the free response section in blue or black ink. You will be permitted to use a calculator on the free response
section of the test. Lab reports will be due no later than a week after completion of the lab. You will be expected to write the rough
draft of your report in the lab composition book and then type up a formal report to be handed in.
Based on your percentage, your quarter and final grades will be assigned according to the FCPS grading scale.
Grading – Final Grade
Your final grade will be weighted and calculated as follows:
Item

1st Quarter
2/9
4th Quarter
nd

All grades will be assigned based on the published FCPS Grading Scale.

Late Work
At Hayfield Secondary School, our focus is on student achievement. A student’s grade is based on achievement: what he or she knows
and is able to demonstrate (mastery learning). All assignments must be completed in order to accurately assess what a student knows
and is able to do so that appropriate feedback can be given to every student. Teachers, school, counselors, and administrators will
ensure that students take advantage of all opportunities to demonstrate mastery of content.
Assignments are given due dates so that learning can progress sequentially in a timely manner. Students who have not had an adequate
opportunity to demonstrate mastery of content because of excused absences or extenuating circumstances should work with their
classroom teachers and school counselor to complete the missing assignments.
Students who habitually fail to turn in work on the assigned due date will be subject to an academic intervention. Late work will be
accepted with a maximum penalty of 20%. Work will not be accepted after the unit test has been administered. If there is an overlap
between the unit test and the end of the quarter, then the turn-in deadline will be the last day of the quarter. If this academic
intervention is unsuccessful and no work has been submitted, a failing mark may be assigned.
Absences and Make-up Work
Attendance is important for school success. Work missed due to an unexcused absence or tardy cannot be made up. If an absence is
excused, you have one class day for each day of absence to complete any missed test, class assignment, or homework. Any other time
frame must be approved by your teacher. You can determine what you have missed and acquire handouts by checking FCPS 24/7
(Blackboard). For laboratory work, you must arrange to stay after school to complete the experiment.
Cheating Policy
Cheating will not be tolerated. Cheating occurs when a student represents the work of others as their own. Consequences for cheating
will include teacher detention, phone calls home, or referral to their Assistant Principal. The consequence will be appropriate to the
severity of the cheating.
Grades must reflect the knowledge of the student. The student will not earn any credit for an assignment in which any portion of the
work has been copied. The student must resubmit the entire assignment for credit.
Extra Help:
The pace of this class is very fast. Do not let yourself fall behind!!! If you are having trouble with the material, please schedule an
appointment to meet with me as soon as possible. You will greatly benefit from forming study groups. It is helpful to communicate
with classmates so that you can stay up to speed on the material. Your textbook has lots of practice problems and the internet is
loaded with videos, tutorials, and practice problems to help you with this class. You expect to spend at least one hour or more every
night of the week reviewing your notes, completing homework, or practicing additional problems.
Back to School Night
Back to School Night will be held on September 18, 2014 at 6:00 pm. I look forward to meeting many parents at this time!
