Abstract: Orientation professionals can improve orientation programs and enhance the quality of
student learning and development by utilizing the CAS (Council on the Advancement of Standards
in Higher Education) Standards and Guidelines in their assessment processes. CAS standards are
constructed to represent criteria that every orientation program should be expected and able to
meet with the application of reasonable effort and diligence. The CAS standards provide an
important set of tools that helps professionals in the self-assessment of their programs. The
purpose of this session is to (1) introduce the CAS Standards and its review process and (2) to
increase participants’ understanding of how to integrate CAS into their department assessment of
programs and student learning outcomes. For each set of standards and guidelines, CAS provides a
self assessment guide (SAG) that includes a recommended comprehensive self-study process for
program evaluation. Seven basic steps to using a SAG are suggested for implementing a functional
area self-study.
This session will be primarily presentation and question and answer. Participant quizzes will be
included to make the session as interactive as possible.

Abstract: First Generation college student attendance at American colleges and universities
continue to rise while institutions face increased scrutiny on overall college completion. How can
institutions better support diverse learners toward their goal of persistence? Programs and
resources that highlight diverse, individual student focused success initiatives while providing
group support and affinity may prove crucial for student success of underrepresented populations.
This presentation highlights the Newbury College NewburyFIRST pilot program concepts and
objectives, which includes a Strengthsquest foundation and share successes, challenges and future
program application. This program was a 2014 NODA Grant Fund proposal.

Abstract: Despite college rankings as a huge factor for students, cost remains a determining factor

Abstract: Central NM Community College moved to an in-person Orientation model in 2014 after
offering only online orientation. Through a curriculum development process, Orientation staff
developed a Faculty "TED Talk" type program to include a faculty speaker at every session to boost
faculty involvement. It's been a favorite among students.
