signing bonus and a $ 3 million option bonus payable in March.
Mike Chappell, Indy Star: The one-year tender, which Freeney has not signed, increased from
$8.644 million to $9.239 million.
Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: The landmark six-year, $72 million contract to which the Indianapolis
Colts signed star pass rusher Dwight Freeney last week, the largest contract ever awarded a
defensive player in the NFL, is relatively salary cap-friendly for a deal of such magnitude… for
2007 and 2008, the salary cap charges are a palatable $5.75 million each year… the standout
right defensive end received an initial signing bonus of $15 million and an option bonus of $15
million. The option bonus is guaranteed by a non-exercise penalty… The base salaries in the
contract are $750,000 (for 2007), $750,000 (2008), $6.22 million (2009), $8.825 million (2010),

The Colts have the right to guarantee both of these roster boni, which would spread the cap hit

Hank Lowenkron, AP: One day after having his contract terminated to provide the Colts with
some salary cap relief, Herrod was back at training camp Thursday after signing a new threeyear contract… The Colts obtained about $700,000 in salary cap relief through the deal… He was
scheduled to earn $1.825 million in 1995. Instead, he'll receive a base pay of $825,000 this year
and a signing bonus of $900,000. The total value of the contract is $3.875 milllion…
Ron Borges, Boston Globe: none of it was enough to offset the bottom line, which in Herrod's
case meant a $1 million base salary this season and a cap value of $1.3 million. Tobin needed
that cap room to sign his draft choices, and although there was an assortment of ways to do the
math, he went for the simplest form: subtraction.

Alex Marvez, Fox Sports: It’s believed the move was made so the Colts would avoid having to

Gary Myers, NY Daily News: 6 years, $ 38 million. Signing Bonus: $ 11.6 million. Base Salaries: $
144,000, $ 180,000, $ 216,000, $ 252,000, $ 286,000, $ 324,000. The key is the contract voids
out after three years if Manning reaches one of many easily attainable incentives. Then the Colts
can buy back three years with an $ 8.4 million signing bonus (that's $ 20 million in bonuses) and
base salaries of $ 3.2 million, $ 4.76 million, $ 9.5 million. How does the contract void? If he
plays 35% of the plays his first year or 45% either his second or third year or leads the team any
year of his first three years in a major passing category or throws for 1,601 yards in any of his
first three seasons.
AP: Manning's contract with the Indianapolis Colts could be worth as much as $48 million or as
little as $14.5 million depending on incentives outlined in the six-year deal, according to Street &
Smith's SportsBusiness Journal magazine published Monday… The quarterback's contract
included an $11.6 million signing bonus… To trigger certain escalator clauses that would enable
him to earn the maximum under his contract, the magazine said, he would have to achieve at
least one of the following during any year of his contract: Rank in the top five in the NFL in
passing yards, touchdown passes, completion percentage, passer rating, or interception
percentage. Be named to the Pro Bowl. Be named first- or second-team all-NFL. Be named firstteam all-AFC. Be named NFL most valuable player or AFC player of the year.
He could receive additional bonuses up to $1.5 million depending on how far the Colts advance
in the playoffs. If Manning qualifies for the escalators in the first year of the contract and
achieves all of the performance incentives, his salary would rise from $944,000 this year to $9.5
million in 2003, for a total of $47.74 million -- including the original signing bonus and another
$8.4 million bonus for re-signing in 2001, the publication said.
Pete Prisco, Sportsline: The overall value of the contract is for nine years and $126 million, but
$28 million of that is in the final two years, which are voidable years if Manning meets some
simple play-time incentives. Essentially the contract is for seven years, $98 million. Starting this
season, Manning will receive base salaries of $535,000, $665,000 (2005), $1 million ('06), $1
million ('07), $11.5 million ('08), $14 million ('09), $15.8 million ('10), $14 million ('11) and $14
million ('12). Manning will also receive roster bonuses of $9 million in 2006 and $10 million in
2007, which will spike his cap numbers for those seasons.
Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: he will have received the entire $34.5 million signing bonus by this time
next year… By 2006, just the third season of the new contract, Indianapolis will almost certainly
have to restructure it. That year, principally because of a $9 million roster bonus, Manning's
salary cap charge rises to $17.766 million… Manning will earn base salaries of $535,000 (2004),
$665,000 (2005), $1 million (2006), $1 million (2007), $11.5 million (2008), $14 million (2009)
and $15.8 million (2010). In addition to the $9 million roster bonus in 2006, there is a $10 million
roster bonus in 2007.
Mike Chappell, Indianapolis Star: Details of Peyton Manning’s five-year, $90 million contract
with the Indianapolis Colts, agreed upon two weeks ago, show a $20 million signing bonus, a $28
million option bonus and a 2011 roster bonus of $3 million. The year-by-year breakdown: 2011:
$3.4 million base, $16 million against the salary cap. 2012: $7.4 million base, $17 million against
the cap. 2013: $8.4 million base, $18 million against the cap. 2014: $9.4 million base, $19 million
against the cap. 2015: $10.4 million base, $20 million against the cap.
Mike Klis, Denver Post: Manning, who will make either — gulp! — $26.4 million or — doublegulp! — $54.4 million. The difference depends on whether a 2012 option bonus of $28 million
that must be exercised in 2011 counts on this year's books or next year's.
Joel Corry, NFP: The remaining $16 million of Manning’s signing bonus proration accelerated
into this year’s cap. However, the Colts are receiving a $5.6 million cap credit since Manning’s
$28 million option bonus was also prorated over the five years of his contract.

Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: he signed his NFL rookie contract in 2003, a three-year deal with the
Indianapolis Colts that included a modest signing bonus of $126,750…
Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: The five-year extension that Mathis signed on Monday carries through
the 2011 season and is worth $30 million. The deal includes an initial signing bonus of $8.1
million and a roster bonus of $3.9 million due next March. There are subsequent roster bonuses
of $2 million each in 2008 and 2009 and of $1 million apiece in 2010 and 2011. Mathis, who
earlier this spring signed a one-year restricted free agent qualifying offer of $2.093 million, will
earn $18.5 million in the first three years of his contract.
Mike Chappell, Indy Star: Mathis, one of the NFL's most disruptive pass-rush ends, on Monday
agreed to a four-year, $36-million contract… It includes a $15 million signing bonus, guarantees
Mathis $17 million in the first year and pays him $24 million over the first two years… Prior to
2006, he signed a six-year, $30 million contract. His rookie deal in '03: three years, $1.037
million.
Aaron Wilson, Scout.com: Mathis received a $15 million signing bonus and the contract averages
$9 million annually. The contract includes approximately $17 million in guaranteed money with
his $2 million base salary for 2012 fully guaranteed for skill, injury and cap… Mathis' salary-cap
figure for 2012 is $5.75 million, and it rises to $10.75 million ($4 million base salary) in 2013
when he's also due a $3 million roster bonus on the third day of the league year. His salary-cap
figures are $8.75 million in 2014 when he's due a $3 million base salary and a $2 million roster
bonus on the third day of the league year and $10.75 million in 2015 when he's due a $4 million
base salary and a $3 million roster bonus on the third day of the league year.
Mike Wells, ESPN: He’ll get a $1.5 million roster bonus on the fifth day of the league year. His
base salary is $3.5 million and he has escalators based on his sacks… He’ll get $250,000 for 10
sacks. It goes up to $500,000 for 11 sacks and $1 million for 12 sacks. Mathis had a league-high
19.5 sacks last season and has four other seasons of at least 10.5 sacks during his 13-year
career… Mathis was due a $3 million roster bonus at the beginning of the league year in 2015.
That’s been changed to $3 million of per-game roster bonuses. He’ll get $1 million for one game
on the 53-man roster and then $125,000 for each game on the roster after that.

AP: Potts's one-year suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy ended yesterday,
but the fullback may not be playing for the Indianapolis Colts this season. Potts, a restricted free
agent, is not happy with his contract. He has been tendered a one-year contract offer of $
361,000 by the Colts. The league's labour agreement allowed the team to lower the offer on
June 15 to $ 266,200.

Len Pasquarelli, ESPN: Instead of a $4.5 million signing bonus, Scioli got just $1 million. There is
a guarantee of $1.5 million in 2005, so that makes up for some of the lost bonus money. But the
