Task Clarification -? Duty - Role -? “Work” Settlement and Closure Some initial thoughts! “Trepidation”- I can’t do this! I don’t get it? How can learning shift from the Prof. to “me”, the “group” & the “Team”? Who’s in charge? I never realized working together would be so difficult! What I said was not what I meant? I can’t express how I think, behave, or feel in words, they’ll be misinterpreted! Now what do I do? Let’s look at how others began! Making Contact -The Beginning Hi Kim, Jason, Amy, and Lori: Since I don't have the pleasure of getting to know you in person, and we'll be together online for a fair amount of time, would you post some introductions? You seem like a fun group, and I'd like to know a little about you--do you hate sushi, love cats, dream of climbing Mt. Everest, you name it. -Thanks, Robin Writing Assistant Jan 29th Hi Robin, I am a senior, psychology major. I plan to graduate in May and eventually, I would like to get my Masters Degree in Counseling. I come from a large family, with three older sisters and a younger brother. I have a dog, Lancer, and my favorite animal - a turtle, Abraham. My hobbies include: sailing, wave runners and time on the beach. Amy WCU Student Jan 29th Writing Assistant Making Contact Hi All. I MEANT to put this in my first message: I'm a writing assistant in Casper and have been assigned your group to assist with any of your writing concerns. You don't even have to have a "concern"--if you simply want to brainstorm some ideas at ANY stage of your writing-just send me a message. - Robin P.S. Kim--you haven't been online yet, but I look forward to hearing about your observations as well. Jan.28th Making Contact -The Beginning TO WCUPA: Well it only took me forever to go through the postings, but I am glad I did. I now have an idea of who we will be working with at WCU. Like everyone else I am confused, but it is slowly but surely making sense. At least I think it is. Anyways, it is nice meeting you (Liz, Mike, and Chris). To the Writing Assistants thank you for being here, we will definitely use you! - Pam - CSULB- Feb. 4th Making Contact -The Beginning thanks a lot for informing us(me, chris and mike) about what you people are up to. this whole "project" is confusing because our classes are so different. So if you all could keep us up to date it would be absolutely jolly. and of course we will always keep you up to date and if there are any questions on your part(s) please ask. Liz, WCU Feb 9, 1999 What Went Well Being polite with one another. ADVICE: One of the most important things about distance collaboration is taking the time to find the right words for our messages so that others don't misinterpret our meanings. Csulb What Went Well We learned to communicate even the smallest detail. This was important because assumptions in a virtual group could lead to misled and frustrated group members. Advice: Our collaboration was good but we rarely kept to deadlines.
