Week 1-1: Laboratory Management
Lesson Synopsis: This week’s lessons are designed to:
 Give students an overview of safety issues, policies and procedures,
 Focus on organizational tools that will enable students to be successful,
 Review the scientific method and demonstrate their ability to conduct
controlled experiments.
Key Concepts:
 Science is a process of observation and investigation through which
information about the natural world is learned.
 Scientists us the scientific method to answer questions about the natural
world.
 Safety is a priority in the classroom, especially when doing lab activities.
 The meanings of many scientific vocabulary words help students to
understand questions and concepts taught.
Week 1-1 Chemistry Vocabulary Words (Quiz on Friday)
Independent variable - the variable that is intentionally changed
Dependent variable - the event studied and expected to change
Control - event that is used as an unchanging standard of comparison
Unit - any division of quantity accepted as a standard
Kilo – prefix representing one thousand
Hecto – prefix representing one hundred
Deka – prefix representing one ten
Deci – prefix representing one tenth
Centi – prefix representing one hundredth
Milli – prefix representing one thousandth
