CLASS CLUBS

The purpose of the class clubs is to provide an opportunity for students to meet fellow classmates while fostering teamwork and leadership skills. In addition, students’ school spirit will be cultivated through school wide events such as Spirit Week and district-wide activities such as Homecoming and the Wellness Fair. While increasing an awareness of community and global issues, club participants will work on activities such as the

Thanksgiving Food Collection, Holiday Gift Drive and Soles for Souls. Fundraising activities will take place at all grade levels to help defray the cost of class activities.

The Comet Shop is the school store. Members become familiar with the practices of operating a business.

Members are responsible for ordering, depositing, paying bills, and organizing. The operation of the school store fosters responsibility, social wellness and integrity.

Ecology Club Ms. Silvestri

Ecology Club members gain an understanding of our environment, work to improve the environment, help protect and preserve wildlife, become physically and spiritually active with nature and promote environmental awareness in the Hicksville Community.

The purpose of this club is to bring a message of tolerance and equality to Hicksville High School that will have a lasting impact on the community. The message and supporting activities will work to end gender and orientation based bullying.

Helping Hands Club Ms. Piscitelli & Mrs. D’Alessio

The purpose of the Helping Hands organization is to provide an opportunity for members to become involved in activities that will facilitate the continued development of pride and values in our communities. The emphasis of the projects, fundraisers and activities is to extend a “helping hand” on a local and global level.

The Interact Club focuses on building awareness and tolerance of different cultures throughout the school and community. The activities, events and supporting fundraisers foster cultural understanding and education.

Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership. Its vision is to promote democratic ideals and positive public opinion.

Natural Helpers Ms. Mayr & Ms. Bocchicchio

The Natural Helpers program is based on a simple premise: within every school, an informal “helping network” exists. Students with problems naturally seek out other students and adults who they trust. Specific training for selected students will be conducted in the fall. Membership is by nomination and faculty approval.

Student Government is the voice of the students. Members are empowered to be decision makers and leaders regarding issues that impact the school and community. Community service activities are planned and executed throughout the school year. Nominations and elections for class representatives and officers will take place in the Fall.

Chess Club Ms. Orman

Members of the chess club enjoy learning strategies to improve their skills in the game of chess. Tournaments and competitions are held throughout the year. No prior knowledge of chess is required. All skill levels are welcome.

DECA Mr. Marlborough & Mr. Surdi

Distributive Educational Clubs of America (DECA) is a business club that competes in accounting, business law, marketing and computer related subjects. These competitions are speaking based which helps members develop public speaking skills. Through membership, students become prepared for college courses in marketing and finance, gain an appreciation for community service and practice key leadership skills

Students interested in utilizing their competitive skills in advanced mathematics are welcome to participate.

Mock Trial Mr. Boyle

Members of the Mock Trial Team participate in competitions throughout the school year. Students will work cooperatively to develop a working knowledge of the law and legal system, analyze complex documents, develop a cohesive team strategy, improve public-speaking skills, think spontaneously in a competitive environment and follow the protocol of a professional demeanor.

Model United Nations Dr. Maxeiner

1 st Meeting: September 10th Room 303 2:30pm

Model United Nations is an authentic simulation of the United Nations General Assembly and its smaller multilateral bodies such as UNICEF, Security Council, and the World Health Organization. Members step into the role of ambassadors for UN member states to debate current international issues. Members make speeches, prepare draft resolutions and negotiate with allies and adversaries in an attempt to resolve international conflicts.

The JBirds inspire its members to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in mentor-based programs that build science, engineering and technology skills, which inspire innovations and foster wellrounded life capabilities. Team members actively participate in fundraising, activities and competitions.

Science Olympiad

Science Olympiad emphasizes a sense of teamwork and competition. Members compete in a multitude of events geared toward evaluating and exploring scientific concepts. Competitive events include anatomy

&physiology, towers, forensics and experimental design.

The Comet News is the official newspaper of Hicksville High School. As the voice of the school, students and faculty opinions on social issues and community events are represented. Members will develop writing skills, meet new people and get involved with various school events.

Comet Yearbook Ms. Gimmi

The Comet Yearbook is a student-run organization. Members are responsible for taking pictures, designing pages and influencing the yearbook layout. The members of this club make memories that last a lifetime.

Video Production Mr. Clive

Video Production provides students with the time, facilities and support necessary to not only further explore the many technical and non-technical aspects of video production, but to help the students develop exemplary work ethics and strengthen their communication, socialization, problem solving, and critical thinking skills. Student produced work is featured on the high school video network.

National Honor Society Mr. Sarandrea

Membership by application. The National Honor Society (NHS) was established to recognize outstanding high school students. The purpose of the NHS encourages each member to demonstrate excellence in academics, provide service and display qualities of leadership. Membership is open to Gr. 11 and Gr. 12 students only.

Membership is by invitation to those students with a weighted average of 90%. Once inducted, all members must follow specific requirements to maintain membership.

National Art Honor Society Mrs. Galante

Membership by application. The National Art Honor Society (NAHS) is a national organization in which distinguished art students are recognized and have the opportunity to share their talents and abilities within our school and community. Membership by application. Members are honored for excellence in English while promoting literacy, community service and exemplary character. Once inducted, all members must follow specific requirements to maintain membership.

Modern Music Masters (Tri-M) Ms. Noll

Membership by application. Modern Music masters, also known as Tri-M is a music honor society that nationally recognizes high school students with exceptional musical abilities and commitment. Students may apply beginning in their sophomore year. Once inducted, all members must follow specific requirements to maintain membership.

National Math Honor Society Mrs. Kislowski

Mu Alpha Theta is the national Math Honor Society dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics, developing string scholarship in the subject and promoting the enjoyment of mathematics. Thespians is an international theatre organization designed to bring theatre to young people and their schools.

Foreign Language Club/ Honor Society

Foreign Language Honor Societies: French, German, Spanish, Italian - Each society recognizes those students who have demonstrated outstanding achievement. Membership is by invitation.

Foreign Language Clubs focus on educating students about the language, food, music and customs of their respective culture. Students do not have to be enrolled in a foreign language course to join.

PERFORMANCE ACTIVITIES

Jazz Ensemble Mr. Shmuel

Membership by audition. Jazz ensemble is an extra-curricular activity that gives students the opportunity to perform music that is not typically rehearsed in concert band during the day. Jazz is the only original genre of

American music. In jazz ensemble students are given the opportunity to explore all different genres of "jazz" music, including swing, Latin, bebop, funk, rock, ballad, bossa nova as well as many more. Our jazz ensemble consists of a grouping of instruments not typically seen in concert band. Our jazz group contains 4 major sections: the sax section, the trumpet section, the trombone section and the rhythm section (includes piano, guitar, bass and drum set).

Madrigal Singers Ms. Emeric

Membership by audition. The Madrigal Singers are a select vocal ensemble that includes high school students with exceptional musical ability and commitment. Members of this ensemble must be a member of the music department and are chosen based on auditions that are held during the month of September. Meetings for the ensemble take place regularly on Wednesday evenings. At these meetings, performance repertoire will be rehearsed in preparation for upcoming concerts and other school functions. Goals for the Hicksville Madrigal

Singers include helping student musicians become comfortable with performing in a smaller ensemble and singing repertoire that is sung acapella. In addition, the music selected is more challenging than repertoire performed with choirs during the school day.

Marching Band/Winterguard Mr. Vollmer/Ms. Deckle

Membership by audition. Members foster friendships, engage the competitive spirit, perform in many exciting venues and work towards achieving their absolute best. This will allow them to focus on individual and collective growth through excellence in performance, exposure to new challenges and recognition that the greatest rewards come from setting goals and achieving them at the highest level.

String Ensemble Ms. Noll

1 st Meeting: September 22 nd Room 177 2:30pm

Membership by audition. The Hicksville High School String Ensemble is an extra-curricular music ensemble dedicated to performance of Level 6 NYSSMA literature. Members perform at the Senior Citizen’s Fall

Luncheon, Fall Concert, Winter II, District Orchestra Concert and Spring II. Select members are chosen to perform with the Chamber Ensemble, with opportunities to perform at district wide events. This group may also attend NYSSMA Majors, an adjudication festival, held at Hofstra University in the spring.
