Name of writer: Lisa Hansen
Name of viewer: Bouchra Boudiz
1. Checklist
o Name Writer’s Theme Here: “Racial Inequality”
o Part 1
o Definition of theme
In your essay you clearly defined your theme and explained how African
Americans faced racial inequality during Harlem Renaissance.
o Close reading of 2 poems that demonstrate that theme
Good Job on your close reading choose, the two poems, “ Negro” and
“Migration”, you chose defines your theme, you just need give a brief idea
about what is each poem talk about, and how are they related to your
them. You can also give examples by using quotes from the poems.
o Part 2
o Clear overview and reading of 3-4 scholarly articles or books on your
particular theme in Hughes
Most of the scholarly articles and the book you used seem interesting and
they defines you theme, but he most useful one I think is “Drums Are Not
Gentlemen: Class and Race in Langston Hughes”. This Article is not only
talk about Hughes visit to Haiti is more discussing all kind of political,
social, and racial turmoil Haitian were facing. In addition, Hughes
examines the race, class, and prejudices in the way how it affected
people’s life.
The book “Langston Hughes, Poet by Rummel,” might be useful too, but I
don’t think you need all this information about Hughes life on your
thematic review. You just need to put all the information that discusses
the context of racial inequality and how was it discussed by Hughes.
o Part 3
o 6-8 additional resources (3-4 should be scholarly; 3-4 can be any type
of text, image, video, webpage, etc.)
In this part you have selected a quiet number of additional resource, and
good job on selecting resources that discuss your theme such as: “I, too
sing America” by Arnold Rampersad, 2001
“The First Book of Rhythms” by Langston Hughes, 1954
“Local Color, global ‘Color’: Langston Hughes, the Black Atlantic, and
Soviet central Asia, 1932
o Citation
Good job on citing your work!!
2. Copy and paste specific passage that is clear, strong, or detailed (then
italicize it):
“American troops were occupying the country, and Hughes saw the way
that the soldiers treated all blacks as lesser citizens, regardless of their
status. He really took to heart the fact that in the eyes of the U.S”
a. Describe why you selected the passage above:
This passage explains clearly the theme that you are discussing in your
paper. It shows the way how Black people were treated badly from
soldiers because of their skin color and their social status.
3. Copy and paste a specific passage that needs work, needs clarity, etc.
(then italicize it):
Even the higher class African American drew racial lines within their own
communities. Some successful African men would marry the highest
women they could find.
a. Describe why you selected the passage above:
This passage need more clarification and development, it is still unclear
what you are trying to say.
4. Do the articles selected clearly relate to Hughes and the writer’s theme?
Point to specific places where the writer does or does not stay focused.
Some of the articles selected are related to Hughes and the writer’s theme. In
the first paragraph of the thematic review the book” Langston Hughes, Poet
by Rummel” it might be not useful for your theme because it talks more
about Hughes biography.
5. Does the writer clearly summarize the different articles selected and
reviewed? Are there areas that the author could improve? If so, where?
You went on deep explanation on some of your articles, but anyway you
clearly summarized the different articles selected and you gave overview on
each article.
6. Does the writer include some connections between the different
articles selected? How so?
You did include some connection between the different articles that can be
seen on the theme of racial equality is appearing in each article and discussed
in so many different ways. In addition each article present racial inequality
and its influence on Hughes’s work.
7. Any comments on the following:
o Focus: on part1 needs more develop. Defines your theme and how it appears
in Hughes’ writing. Give brief summary about your close reading poem.
o Organization: work on organization of the paragraph. Try to put them
together to clarify your discussion in each paragraph.
o Summary clarity: summary is clear, language is clear, but some of your
summaries are too broad
o Usefulness of resources: avoid some usefulness resource that might not
clarify your work and make it boring
o Sentence structure: Good Job on sentence structure 
