Do Now
Define poetry (without using
poem, poetic, poetical, or any
other form of the word
“poetry.”)
Rhyme Scheme
Rhyme scheme- The pattern of
the rhyme in a poem or song.
Not all poems rhyme.
Follow along as we read Robert
Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a
Snowy Evening” and identify the
rhyme scheme.
“Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening”
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

Extended Metaphor
Metaphor- a comparison between two
unlike things
Example: The clouds were fists of wind and
moisture.
Extended Metaphor- A metaphor
that continues throughout a
whole stanza (paragraph) or
entire poem or song.
Now, follow along as we read Robert
Frost’s “The Road Not Taken,”
identify the rhyme scheme, and
recognize the extended metaphor.
“The Road Not Taken”
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

What is the extended metaphor
found in “The Road Not Taken”?
Each road in these woods represents a path in the poet’s life,
two different directions that he could take his life.
Let’s re-read the poem and see how these roads represent
two different paths of life.
“The Road Not Taken”
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
A choice of two paths in life appeared.
He couldn’t do both things.
It was his decision, and he had to think.
He thought about one choice and
how it would play out into the future.
Then he thought about the other choice
and that it might be better
because it was less popular/harder.
But how both paths would play out,
would be about the same.
And both that morning equally lay
The choices were equal
In leaves no step had trodden black.
And he couldn’t simply follow others.
Oh, I marked the first for another day! He saved the harder choice for later,
Yet knowing how way leads on to way but knew that one choice leads to another
I doubted if I should ever come back.
so he probably won’t ever revisit it.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
With a sigh, he’ll tell this story
sometime way in the future
about how he had a choice
and he chose the less popular/harder, and
it was worth it (even though he didn’t).
Now
Listen closely to the following and see if you can
recognize the extended metaphor.
So, what’s the extended metaphor?
Lil’ Wayne as a doctor “saving” other rapper’s
lives = Lil’ Wayne trying to tell rappers how to
save rap.
Let’s take a closer look at the second verse.
Respect is in the heart.
So thats where i'ma start.
