1. Land of the Cicones; Land of Ismarus- Underestimates the army driven back out to sea with heavy losses; wine that has been blessed by the gods. 2. Lotus Eaters His men eat the lotus flower and it made them lose all hope of home; drags the men back to the ship and ties them to the rowing benches 3. Cyclops- His curiosity draws him into the cyclop’s cave; takes 12 of his best men and the wine from the land of Ismarus; He finds sheep, pottery, goats, whey, and cheese. His gets eaten by Polythemus (Cyclops). They plan to stab him in the eye to blind him and to disguise themselves as sheep. Odysseus tricks him with wine and his name “No body”. Polythemus wants Odysseus to come back and treat well and have Poseidon befriend him. Odysseus declines. 4. Aeolus Island- God of Wind Odysseus is given a bag of the unfavorable winds. Aeolus likes that he uses his mind and he is the first person to visit him. Odysseus’ men open the bag of wind before they step foot on the shores of Ithaca, and they are blown back out to sea. They are blown back to Aeolus, but he’s not willing to help him a second time. 5. Land of the Laestrygonians – Cannibals More of men are eaten; only one ship remaining- Odysseus’ ship 6. Circe Island- His are turned into pigs by her charm. Odysseus is able to resist because Hermes, (Messenger of the gods), gives him an herb that makes him stay human. They are on her island for 5 years. She tells him that he must go to the Underworld to get home. Speak to blind prophet Tiresias. 7. Underworld – He sees his mother; she killed herself; Tiresias warns him not to kill the cattle of Lord Helios 8. Circe Island- warns him of Sirens, Scylla, Charydis, and not to harm the cattle of Helios and not to fight back with Scylla. She instructs him to have his men tie up to the ship and to plug the men’s ears with bees wax. 9. Sirens, Scylla, and Charybdis- pass the Sirens and Scylla eats six of men and Charybdis tries to devour his ship but doesn’t succeed. Scylla- six headed sea serpent; Charybdis- giant whirl pool that devours ships. 10. Island of Lord Helios- Odysseus is reluctant to stop there of the warning given to him by Circe and Tiresias; he gives in after Eurylucus convinces him that it is best for his men and himself. Warns his not to get off the ship and not to harm the cattle. A storm comes and pushes them into the sea cave and it lasts a month. The provisions, food, on ship dwindle down and the men go ashore and hunt sea birds and fish. Meanwhile, Odysseus goes inland to pray and the gods put him into a deep sleep. Euryluclus, he convinces the men drowning is better fate than starvation, so they need to sacrifice the cattle. Lord Helios asks Zeus to strike down Odysseus’ ship and kill his men. Odysseus is thrown into the sea and he makes a raft and is pushed back to Scylla and Charybdis. 11. Scylla and Charybdis- He clings to a fig tree because Charybdis swallows his raft. When she spits it back up, he swims with the raft past Charybdis and Scylla. He drifts in the open ocean for 9 days. 12. Calypso’s Island – He is captive on her island 7 years. Zeus sends Hermes to tell him to release Odysseus so that he can go home. She promises him immortality, and he denies her. 13. Phaecians – Odysseus is invited to dinner as a guest, and he is treated very well by the king. Being a good guest, Odysseus tells the king of his long journey, and the king gives Odysseus a ship and a crew to take him home. They give Odysseus a sleeping potion along the way so that he would sleep through the journey, and they set him ashore on the island of Ithaca. 14. Returns to Ithaca- Athena disguises him as an old beggar, he meets his son for the first time, and he kills all the suitors with the help of Athena, Apollo, Telemachus, Eumaeus, and Philoteius. He is reunited with Penelope.
