4BK Class Assembly: Poetry Yusra Gillian Sajin Lily Bethany Rosie Good afternoon and welcome to our class assembly. This term we have been studying poetry. We have been using the Internet to research different kinds of poetry. One type of poem that we have looked at is a ballad. A ballad is a simple song where the verses are all sung to the same melody or rhythm A ballad is a song that tells a story, and it can be dramatic , funny or romantic. The class will perform I often contradict myself – a funny ballad by Keith Nesbitt Half Class- I often contradict myself. Other half class- Oh no, I never do. Half class- I argue with me day and night. OHC- That simply isn’t true. HC- Oh yes it is. OHC- Oh no it's not. HC- I do this all day long. OHC- Oh no I don't. HC- Oh yes I do. OHC- That's right. Jake Elliott Dylan Lexi Aafna, Bethany, Lily, Rosie, Presley James Jake Tyler Ryley Leo Michael Nafiz Tyler Leo Ryley Etty Ellis Natalie April Michael Another type of poem is a limerick. Limericks have five lines and are silly and funny. The first, second and fifth lines rhyme with each other. The third and fourth lines rhyme too. Here is an example of a limerick There once was an ape in a zoo Who looked out through the bars and saw YOU! Do you think it's fair To give poor apes a scare? I think it's a mean thing to do. Here is another example An elephant lay in his bunk, In slumber his chest rose and sunk, He snored and he snored Till the jungle folks roaredThen his wife tied a knot in his trunk Haikus are another type of poem. "Haiku" is a traditional form of Japanese poetry. Haiku poems consist of 3 lines It is important to write the correct amount of syllables in a haiku. The first and last lines of a Haiku have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables. The lines rarely rhyme. Haikus are often about nature Here are some examples: Green and speckled legs, Hop on logs and lily pads Splash in cool water. In a pouch I grow, On a southern continent -Strange creatures I know. The next type of poem we researched was an Demmi-Lee Chloe Kayla Rhyan Jak Frankie Yusra Gillian Sajin Lily Bethany Rosie Presley Jake Elliott Dylan Lexi Aafna acrostic poem An acrostic poem is a very fun poem for kids Each acrostic poem has a topic idea running down the left side of the poem Each letter in the topic word has a new thought that runs off the side from left to right and is relevant to the topic word. Here is an example of an acrostic poem A narrative poem tells you a story They do not have to rhyme all the time They do not have a particular number of verses Narratives do not have a particular number of lines. An example is: Adventures of Isabel by Ogden Nash Isabel met an enormous bear, Isabel, Isabel, didn't care; The bear was hungry, the bear was ravenous, The bear's big mouth was cruel and cavernous. The bear said, Isabel, glad to meet you, How do, Isabel, now I'll eat you! Isabel, Isabel, didn't worry. Isabel didn't scream or scurry. She washed her hands and she straightened her hair up, Then Isabel quietly ate the bear up. Once in a night as black as pitch Isabel met a wicked old witch. the witch's face was cross and wrinkled, The witch's gums with teeth were sprinkled. Ho, ho, Isabel! the old witch crowed, I'll turn you into an ugly toad! Isabel, Isabel, didn't worry, James Nafiz Tyler Leo Ryley Isabel didn't scream or scurry, She showed no rage and she showed no rancor, But she turned the witch into milk and drank her. Isabel met a hideous giant, Isabel continued self reliant. The giant was hairy, the giant was horrid, He had one eye in the middle of his forehead. Good morning, Isabel, the giant said, I'll grind your bones to make my bread. Isabel, Isabel, didn't worry, Isabel didn't scream or scurry. She nibbled the toast that she always fed off, And when it was gone, she cut the giant's Etty Ellis Natalie April Michael Demmi-Lee Chloe head off. Another type of poetry is a sonnet English sonnets consist of 14 lines; three, four line verses accompanied by a two line closing verse. Sonnets have a special rhyming scheme The first and third lines of each four line verse rhyme and the second and fourth lines of each four line verse rhyme. The two lines of the closing verse should rhyme as well. Here is an example of a sonnet Kayla CAT VERSUS Rhyan Jak My cat stares blankly at the wall Trying to hunt the light. She flicks her tail and starts to crawl, Eyes focused, fur upright. Frankie I watch her, silently, as she creeps Slowly towards her prey. Yusra I remain still, as if fast asleep For this is not child’s play. Gillian Her moving stops, she is ready To jump up and attack. Sajin I see her ascend, now unsteady; I gasp, and she looks back. Lily Bethany Rosie Presley Jake Nafiz Her eyes are chasms, black holes throughout, And my flashlight goes quickly out. Finally we have been writing some riddles. They are all based on animals Can you guess which animal they are about? Thank you for listening to our assembly
