Too often – Board sets goals for CEO – sometimes without her collaboration – Then, being a good CEO, she allows her direct reports to set their own departmental goals – All year she’s caught between helping them on their goals AND trying to do hers Cascading Goals Is your org using them? Goals flow from strategy – Board sets strategy – Board and CEO set goals for her year – CEO shares ORGANIZATION’S goals with direct reports and helps their goals be in concert with them Vision/Mission/Values This requires that the org has a vision and a mission that goals can flow out of. Big stress when our values aren’t in line with our organizations. What are your personal values? As a leader, you need to be clear on this. Personal Mission Statement How many have them? This is something you can come back to daily or monthly to reconnect with the big picture. EXERCISE: What do you want said in your eulogy? Write it out now. It’s about letting the leaders who report to you thrive. Imposter Syndrome At times, we all feel like imposters, posers. We all feel like the Wizard of Oz “Don’t pay attention to the man behind the curtain” How do you deal with that? On Stage When I’m stretched beyond my comfort level, those tend to be the times I find out how much God’s done in me. Disney’s “On Stage” idea has been helpful here – not being dishonest. But being “on stage” and acting like you can do it. And being self-assured to admit your limits.
