Each student will choose 2 assignments to complete associated with their summer
reading novel. The summer reading project will be worth 50 points each for a total of
100 points for the project. Each book must have a different project. All projects will be
due August 29, 2014. Late projects will be penalized.
Assignment Choices:
PQP Letter: Students will write a letter to the author of the book you read for summer
reading u sing the PQP method. P: Praise: Tell the author something you liked about
the novel. Q: Question: Ask the author several questions about the novel. These
questions should reflect specifics of plot and characters. P: Polish: Give the author
several suggestions on how to improve the novel. Think of what you would have done
differently if you'd written this book.
Bio-Poem: Students will choose one character in the novel and write a formatted poem
about that character. Poem will explain character's family life, likes and dislikes, the
setting, and plot of the novel. The poem should have minimum of 10 lines no more than
15 lines.
Biography and Sketch: Students will choose one character in the novel and write a
300 word biography. The biography should explain where the character lives, the
conflict(s) the character faces in the novel, tell about their family life, and summarize the
resolution or ending of the novel. Then the student will draw a sketch of the character.
The sketch can be a head and shoulder picture or a scene from the novel. The sketch
must be in color. Both the sketch and the biography must be mounted to poster
board.
Family Photo Album: Student has the option to draw pictures, cut out pictures from
magazines, or find pictures on the internet. The student will use these pictures to create
a family photo album for the novel they read. Each picture should have a short two three sentence caption explaining the picture. The pictures should depict scenes from
the novel. (For example: In the novel Huckleberry Finn, Huck and Jim spend most of the
novel on a raft traveling down the Mississippi River - I should find or draw a picture of
Huck and Jim on a raft and write a short caption under the picture explaining the
action). The photo album must contain 10 color pictures and each picture must have a
short caption. The photo album must be placed in a three prong folder.
Character Interview: Students will choose one main character and write an interview
style article. The article must be written in question and answer format and have at
least 10 questions with answers based on the novel. The questions should go beyond
the basic plot and setting of the novel.
PowerPoint Presentation: Students will create a PowerPoint Presentation about their
summer reading novel with a minimum of 10 slides. Slide 1 = The title slide: Should tell
the name of the novel and the students name. Slide 2 = Author: should tell the author of
the novel and a short paragraph about the author. Slides 3 - 5 = Plot Summary: These
three slides should summarize the plot of the story using your own words and not
anything you found from the internet. (Plagiarism, using someone else's work as your
own, will result in an F and you will have to complete an alternate project in academic
detention.) Slides 6 - 9 = Characters: These four slides should talk about the main
characters of the novel in detail and again in the students' own words. Slide 10 =
Student's Opinion: Explain in two paragraphs why you liked or disliked the book. All
slides must contain a picture.
