The project was based around designing and gaining funding for a new entertainment game that was going to be created by Totem Learning under a new division called Totem Play. During my time with the organisation I was able to use their expertise and knowledge to guide myself through the steps to completing the project. The first hurdle I came to was the project. Gaming is not one of my interests and I did not have a clue where to start! After speaking to my manager and mentor about my doubts we came up with a plan for me to write the game idea as a story, going into detail on how the ‘story’ would develop. This was right up my street! Once I got the story down and I pitched it to the team it was time to work with the Graphic Designers. It was amazing to see my random doodles and descriptions become something real. This took up the first two weeks of my placement, so the third week was solely focused on gaining funding to create the game and not just a preview. After some initial research, a project plan was put together and a funding method was decided on; crowd funding. The fourth week was spent watching the donations go up and my confidence soar. During this week I drifted from the project so I started working on mini projects such as creating a phone application and going to a local school to talk to other students about my Work Experience placement. Unfortunately I was no longer at Totem when the crowdfunding deadline came so I am unsure of if this was successful or not. I was initially out of my comfort zone but with support from Totem I was able to thrive. My placement with Totem Learning has changed my views on what environment I wanted to work in. Before starting my placement I always pictured myself working in a big busy office but Totem Learning was the opposite. The environment was small, friendly and laid back and I was comfortable and happy. Without this placement I wouldn’t be in the position that I am now. Out of the whole placement the main aspect that stood out to me was the development of the project and the fundraising aspect. It is because of this I started to look at fundraising as a career and this is how I gained my position as Fundraising Apprentice at Fair Train.
