by a common factor.
I will show you three different ways to do this
problem.
12 divided by 2 =6 6 divided by 6 = 1
24 divided by 2=12 12 divided by 6 = 2
***Notice divide the numerator and the
denominator by the same number!!!!

Find GCF: (Write as prime factorization)
 12= 2 x 2 x 3
 24= 2 x 2 x 2 x 3
 GCF is 2x2x3=12….. So divide each by 12
 12 divided by 12 is one
 24 divided by 12 is 2…. Answer 1/2


Write number as prime factorizations and cross out
common numbers.
12= 2 x 2 x 3
24= 2 x 2 x 2 x 3
Cross out what they have in common
12= 2 x 2 x 3
24= 2 x 2 x 2 x 3
What is left? Looks like nothing on top, really is a
one because 2 divided by 2 is 1, 3 divided by 3 is 1,
answer is ½.
