The Great Arsenal of Democracy • The US had to help defeat the Axis threat. • Roosevelt enacts the LendLease Act, in use from 1941-1945, the president would lend or lease arms to “any country whose defense was vital to the US.” • Isolationist opposed this plan. It passed regardless. German U-Boats in the Atlantic • As aide streamed across the Atlantic to the Soviet Union and the Allied Powers, German U-Boats or Unterseeboot were hunting all supply lines. • Up to 40 subs patrolled the North Atlantic and were responsible for sinking multiple ships. • In 1941 Roosevelt granted the navy permission for US Warships to attack U-Boats in self defense. The Atlantic Charter • British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and US President Franklin Roosevelt met in secret aboard the Battleship USS Augusta. • This meeting became the basis of a new document called “A Declaration of the United nations.” • The declaration was signed by 26 nations.
