Comparing and Contrasting the English Colonies
One key way to hone your analytical writing abilities is to develop the skills to compare and
contrast ideas, concepts, and situations. This assignment will help you increase your skill at this
type of writing. Read the article, “Two Models of English Colonization, 1600-1660” by Jack
Greene and use the information Greene provides as well as your textbook (chapters 2, 3, 4) to
create a chart which compares and contrasts the colonial regions (Southern colonies, Middle
colonies, New England colonies). If there are differences within a region, specify those on the
chart. You can use the blank chart on the back of this sheet OR make your own if you need
more space. Create a column for each region and include a row for each of the following:









names of colonies from each region
motives for establishment of the colony,
social classes/forms of labor,
political systems,
religion,
economy,
relationship with natives
role of women
physical geography
For any arguments that you borrow from the Greene article, include the initials ‘JG’
AND page number where you found the evidence in your chart! This should start to
get you in the habit of citing your sources. You must cite sources if you want full
credit for this assignment.
ALSO, answer the following questions (responses may be bullet-pointed) on the back of
your chart or on another sheet of paper which you attach to your chart:
a) How did the English experience in Ireland inform the English colonial experience in
America?
b) What elements did all these colonies have in common?
c) What major differences existed?
d) What accounts for the differences?
e) Within each region, which characteristics maintained continuity over time between the
first founding of the colony and the mid-1700s? (provide at least 1 specific example for
each region.)
f) Within each region, which of the characteristics changed over time between the first
founding of the colony and the mid-1700s? What accounts for those changes? (provide at
least 1 specific example for each region.)
