Chinese Holidays:


This is a list of 4 important Chinese holidays. Read the date in Chinese Characters and the short
description in English.
Write the holiday in the order that they appear in a year. Write the date in Chinese Characters and
the name of the holiday in English.
1. National Day 十月一日
a. China’s current government, called the People’s Republic of China, was founded on October
1st, 1949. The first of October is still celebrated throughout China, much like the 4th of July
is celebrated in the United States.
2. Confucius Birthday 九月二十八日
a. Confucius (551-479 BCE) was one of China’s most important philosophers. His ideas have
been central to Chinese culture for more than two thousand years. Confucianism shapes
family life, government, and the educational system of China. His birthday is celebrated
every year as a way to honor his contributions to Chinese history and culture.
3. Chinese New Year 二月十九日
a. This holiday is the first day of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Unlike the New Year holiday that
is celebrated on January 1st every year, this holiday is the first day of a festival that lasts for
15 days. This is the most important Chinese holiday! You will get the chance to learn about
this holiday in-depth later in the unit!
4. Mid-Autumn Festival 九月八日
a. The Mid-Autumn Festival is another important holiday in China. On this holiday, people
across China reunite with their families and enjoy large meals with traditional foods, like
moon cakes. This is something similar to Thanksgiving in the United States, although they
are very different holidays. You will get the chance to learn more about this holiday in-depth
later in the unit!
