From Books To Films! WebQuest Presenters: Andrea Heilig & Dana Vendetti EDU 505 Dr. Yang Introduction Have you ever wondered how a book is made into a movie? Did you ponder if a movie you are watching was first a book? In English class, do you always ask your teacher if you will be watching the movie of what you have just read? Have you ever read a book that you thought should be made into a movie? Are you ever let down because a movie did not include all of the events that happened in the book? Can you think of the number one reason why watching a movie of a book you just read helps you to understand the story better? Task As you navigate through the following websites, I would like you to complete two assignments based on books that are made into films. • The first assignment is to read a book that has been turned into a movie and complete a review. • The second assignment is designing your own movie based on your favorite book. You will have two projects that must be handed in either before or on the deadline. Process Assignment One: • Read a book that has been turned into a film • Watch the film that was inspired by the book • Write a review comparing them • 1. 2. 3. 4. Base your review on the following criteria: Characters : Does the movie portray the characters accurately based on the book? Are all the characters included in the movie? Plot: Does the movie contain the same plot as the book? How is it the same, and how is it different? Conflict: Are the same conflicts present in the movie that you read in the book? Are there are new conflicts or conflicts left out? Opinion: Your opinion counts!! Include your thoughts on whether you like the book or the movie more. Process: The Review Cont. An understanding of how books become movies Teacher Page In our ELA classrooms today, many teachers are using movies to help enhance literature being read in the classroom. The benefits of both reading a novel and viewing it are very helpful for students to create a visual, useful to enhance differentiated instruction, and an immense tool to provide for ELL students. The ELA standards that are satisfied by using this WebQuest are the following: Standard 1: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for information and understanding. Standard 3: Students will read, write, listen, and speak for critical analysis and evaluation.
