What does FOIL stand for?
FOIL is an acronym that stands for
F – first
O- outer
I – inner
L – last
So what does that help me do?
FIRST
(x + 3)(x – 4)
The terms in red are first terms.
Multiply them. (x)(x)
x2
OUTER
(x + 3)(x – 4)
The terms in red are the outer
terms.
Multiply them. (x)(-4)
-4x
INNER
(x + 3)(x – 4)
The terms in red are the inner
terms.
Multiply them. (3)(x)
3x
LAST
(x + 3)(x – 4)
The terms in red are the last terms.
Multiply them. (3)(-4)
-12
Now combine like terms.
First = x2 Outer = -4x Inner = 3x Last = -12
x2 – x – 12
F
L
(x + 3)(x – 4)
